SSE: How The Next Generation Is Building Low-carbon Infrastructure

Category: Generation (Age Friendly)

Career and Talent Development

Leading electricity infrastructure company SSE has kickstarted the careers of the latest recruits who will help the company deliver a homegrown energy system.

The Perth headquartered business recently unveiled it is on track invest up to £15bn this decade in Scotland’s low-carbon and renewable energy infrastructure, £24bn in the UK.

The company estimates its projects will deliver 1,000 direct jobs a year to 2025 across the UK and many more through its supply chain, and it is already supporting more than 40,000 roles across the country. The company recently welcomed around 150 apprentices and 150 graduates to the business at induction events over the last week.

John Stewart, SSE Director of HR, said:

“We’re pushing ahead with our plans to develop a cheaper, cleaner more secure UK energy system by investing billions in clean energy infrastructure.

“Right now our engineers and apprentices are working in operational roles and on projects up and down the UK. But in order to accelerate progress and deliver our ambitious delivery plans we need to bring in around 1,000 people a year into highly skilled good green jobs and apprentices and trainee engineers are absolutely vital to that.

“These latest recruits will maintain and help develop critical infrastructure and I’m very pleased to welcome them into the business.”

The new recruits will be deployed across SSE in a variety of roles from building wind farms to maintaining flexible electricity grids to transport more clean power.

Many of the apprentices will work in rural and coastal communities, providing high quality, well paid training opportunities which support local economies and communities across the UK.

This includes in cutting edge developments such as the world’s largest offshore wind farm, essential network upgrades and hydrogen, carbon capture and storage (CCS) and hydro-electric power projects.

Positions include SSEN Distribution apprentice jointers, linespersons and electrical fitters working on the electricity network in the north of Scotland and central southern England. Technicians in SSE Renewables will be building and maintaining cutting edge onshore and offshore wind including some of the biggest in the world.

Michael Matheson, Net Zero and Energy Secretary, said:

“The coming decade will be truly transformative for our energy sector - delivering further good, green jobs and benefits for communities as we transition to become a net zero economy.

“Scotland is perfectly placed to become a global powerhouse of renewable energy and the number of skilled jobs across the sector and wider supply chain will only grow over the coming years. I welcome SSE’s commitment to playing a strong role in our energy transition and I look forward to this new drive helping more people into Scotland’s green energy workforce.”

Among those joining spoke at recent apprentice induction events across the country.

Chris Philp MP, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, said:

“Our core mission is growth. That means better jobs, higher wages, and more opportunity for everyone.

“Jobs, like the 1,000 a year SSE will deliver over the next three years, which will secure our energy supplies and deliver opportunity to the heart of previously overlooked coastal communities.”

Eva Thomas, 24, Portsmouth, SSEN

“I was attracted to how well SSE support their employees and provide a lot of opportunities to progress and grow my career. I’m looking forward to working for SSE and the variety that the job provides as well as being able to learn and improve my skills and knowledge in a supportive and encouraging environment.”

Stuart MacLeod, 24, from Stornoway, SSEN

“I worked closely with the SSEN team in a previous job and I’ve always had an interest, so when I saw the opportunity I just went for it. I’ll be based out of Stornoway and will be down in Perth training. I’m from the islands, originally, so it’s good to be able to work close to home. It’s an exciting job and does really interest me, there’s clear progression and opportunity too. Hopefully I’ll have a good long career with SSE.”

Zeke Balanquit, 17 from Gairloch, SSEN

“I’m training in a multi-craft role. Working in this role I feel like we’ll really be out in the field. The area I’m from is very remote but I really like it, I get to see an area of Scotland many others wouldn’t. It’s been great meeting everyone and I’ve really enjoyed fitting in with my new colleagues.”

Timothy Idowu, 17, Aberdeen, SSEN

“I wanted to do electrical engineering at university but getting the chance to learn the trade whilst working in a practical job is brilliant. I’ll get to study and work, it’s a brilliant mix. It is good to be involved in a company developing renewables as the world needs alternative fuels to help the climate.”

Rose Howe, 16, from Oban, SSEN

“I’ve always been interested in engineering. I know SSE do a lot in efforts to cut carbon emissions and build more renewables and that was quite important to me. The training has been world class and being able to work with people that are passionate about what they do has been appealing to me. I’m currently training to be an automation technician and fitter, I’ve already gone out and done some work at the depot which I’ve really enjoyed. There is real opportunity to progress. I like the practical work, getting out and getting your hands dirty. I enjoy the theory but I want to be outdoors doing the work. I know a lot of people in the community so it’ll be nice to work locally.”

William Wright, 18, from Wick, SSER

I’m going into renewables and it is a job for life, it’s not going anywhere. Getting started at a young age, I’m set-up for a good career with the company. I’m from Wick and Beatrice is so close to home, you can see it from the town. I’ve also always been in and around the sea growing up. I find the sheer size, scale and how it was constructed just fascinating.”
