Celebrating National Apprenticeship Week at Bromford - Age is not a barrier

Apprenticeships

Hello everyone, Steve here! It’s National Apprenticeship Week and so, I'm thrilled to share the unexpected journey that led me to complete a level 7 senior leader apprenticeship.

You see, I never had the chance to attend university. The academic world wasn't part of my story, but life has a funny way of surprising you. The road to achieving this started with hesitation but turned into a transformative experience that I wouldn't trade for anything.

So, how did I end up on this apprenticeship adventure? Well, let me take you back to the beginning. Back in 2019 my leader approached me with an opportunity – a chance for me to take on one of the apprenticeship positions that might otherwise go unused. Initially doubtful, I was unsure if starting a level 7 apprenticeship was the right fit for me. But, my leader saw potential in me and encouraged me to consider the opportunity. So, with a mix of hesitation and interest, I found myself on a path that would test me in ways I never imagined.

Now, I must say, I wasn't a postgraduate or university graduate. When I started this journey at age 59, I had some old qualifications from my earlier years, but diving into a level 7 programme felt like entering uncharted territory. "Me, an apprentice? Seriously?" I thought, nevertheless, there was a spark of curiosity that led me to take the plunge.

The road to acceptance wasn't smooth – the first university I applied to rejected me due to perceived risks, but if I’m being honest that setback only fuelled my determination. So, it was great news when the University of Wolverhampton, known for its inclusivity, offered me an interview. After a positive discussion with one of the university's leaders, I was accepted. However, this was just the beginning.

To meet the university's requirements, I had to take several exams, three maths and two English. It was a daunting task, but I completed it in just one month. The dedication stemmed from my inability to let things linger – a trait that served me well throughout the entire apprenticeship journey.

In January 2021, I officially began my level 7 apprenticeship (a master’s degree) and by September 2023, I proudly graduated. The three-year span was not without its challenges, and the workload demanded extensive hours, especially on weekends. During that first year I faced some struggles with certain modules and getting my head around referencing. But I kept on going and graduated with merit, I also achieved distinctions in a Chartered Managers Institute qualification and earned a fellowship, complete with a gold-embossed certificate.

Beyond the academic achievements, this apprenticeship reshaped my perspective. It proved that age should never be a barrier to learning and adapting to contemporary ways of thinking. Motivation isn't confined to a specific age group, success is about your journey, your thoughts, and what challenges you're willing to take on. This apprenticeship has undeniably enhanced my leadership skills.

In short, go for an apprenticeship if you're thinking about it. It's more than just getting qualifications; it's about growing as a person, learning to be resilient, reliable, and strong. Bromford has been a great support, but don't forget the help you get from friends, family, and your university too. They all play a big part in making the experience better. Yes, it'll be tough, but with all the support and the skills you'll gain, it's totally worth it.
