Minhas' journey with Accenture from Tech Support to Team Lead of IT infrastructure

Category: Social Mobility

Testimonial

Growing up, I always had an interest in technology and computer systems. I completed my bachelor’s degree in Computer Networking and went into various network-related roles before finally moving to Accenture.

I moved to the UK 3 years ago from Dubai -UAE, and my previous experience and love for computer networking made me the perfect fit for my initial role as a Technical Support Engineer.

Since then, I’ve become a Team Lead for the infrastructure services team. It’s my team’s responsibility to ensure that the IT infrastructure services are always up and running, enabling users to work without any problems. IT infrastructure includes all hardware, software, and network resources that are necessary to deliver IT services within the organisation. We act as the first point of call for internal staff and clients for their infrastructure or connectivity related issues.

Having been in the business for a few years now, there are some key things that stand out to me about why this is such a great place to build your career:

The opportunity to make a real difference

One thing Accenture gives its people is the chance to get involved in a range of projects and initiatives. For example, I was given the opportunity to lead the Internet of Things (IoT) Segmentation project for UK and Ireland. The IoT Network Segmentation Program was created to improve Accenture’s overall security posture by movement of IoT on the corporate network to appropriate segments. This project has given me an opportunity to learn about the infrastructure and teams in each location and I believe it allowed me to strengthen my leadership skills and confidently move on to the Team lead role. This is just one example of work that we’ve undertaken that makes a big difference for the business.

The opportunity to grow

Because of the sheer size of Accenture, there are always opportunities to develop and grow. I want to progress in my career and feel that I’ve always received the guidance and support from my team lead and manager to help me work towards this. Accenture also provides access to programmes to help you grow professionally, such as the continuous learning programme. This has definitely expanded my breadth of knowledge and expertise throughout my career.

To be truly successfully within the technology field, I would say you shouldn’t focus on tech skills alone. It’s important to continue growing softer skills such as problem-solving, communication and leadership skills. You have to keep yourself up to date with what’s going on within your field. IT evolves at such a rapid pace so clinging to what you know today just won’t suffice. It’s important to take on as many learning opportunities that help in personal and professional growth. If you want to take your development seriously, you even have opportunity to get connected with a like-minded community of others that are looking to grow their IT skills as well.

The opportunity to be yourself

Without doubt, the best thing in Accenture is the people. It’s the people that make the difference. Accenture is a global company, so you get to interact with different people from across the world.

It’s always interesting to see how Accenture has built an environment that’s committed to inclusion and diversity, which in turn enables everyone to step in and make them feel like one community. I get to take my full self to work, in an environment that fosters respect and relationship building.

I’m also passionate about work/life balance so outside of work, I spend most of my time with my two children or playing sports. I’m a big fan of cricket, football, and badminton. I also take part in volunteer work with different charity organisations, and I have been working with Marie Curie for the last two weekends to collect donations. Accenture also offers us 3 days of paid volunteering leave a year, which means I can volunteer for projects I’m passionate about with the support of the business.

Looking ahead, I plan on continuing to climb up the ladder and pursuing more managerial roles, one step at a time!
