Jobs and Careers for Older People

How old is 'too old' to work? At VERCIDA, we do not think you are ever too old to do work of some sort. We believe the only thing that matters is your ability to do the tasks assigned to you. As long as you can perform up to your company's expectations, you deserve the opportunity to keep working. However, this should not stop you from finding employment. VERCIDA hosts jobs for older people, too.

You might be looking for a new job because of:

  • Redundancy
  • Change in marital status
  • Change in your health
  • A move to another part of the country
  • A desire to do something different

The older person looking for work should have the opportunity to do so with confidence in the fact that he or she has something to offer. We provide that opportunity by way of our extensive jobs database with listings from nearly every sector. We invite you to use our database to find your next job.

We make sure to work with employers who have a proven track record for fostering inclusive workplace environments in which any individual can feel safe and valued.

What You Can Contribute

Older people can be very beneficial to business owners due to the experience they bring to the table. Depending on your age, you have probably already been in the workforce for at least 20 years. Two decades of working has enabled you to learn a lot of practical knowledge you just cannot get from sitting in the classroom. That practical knowledge is valuable to employers.

It is hard to overstate the value that your decades of experience can add to a CV. This is something that younger applicants cannot compete with you on. You should, therefore, use it to your advantage. Remember, as well as the direct experience you have gained from employment, any other volunteer work and relevant experiences you have accumulated over the years will make you even more attractive to employers.

As an older worker, you are also likely to be more flexible than your younger peers. This gives you greater access to some fields of work that require more flexibility than younger workers are able to accommodate. Use it to your advantage.

Types of Jobs Available

What type of job are you looking for? You might be interested in finding something in a field for which you have already been trained. Alternatively, perhaps you are interested in an apprenticeship or retraining programme to start something new.

  • Technology
  • Skilled trades
  • Manufacturing
  • Healthcare
  • Hospitality
  • Travel and Tourism
  • Retail

The variety of jobs available to older workers is too extensive to do it justice here. However, rest assured there is work out there. If nothing is available in a field you have already worked in, we encourage you to consider an apprenticeship or a college retraining programme. Thanks to the government's lifting of the age cap for student loans, it is now easier than ever before for older people to go back to school to learn a new trade.

The technology field is becoming an increasingly popular one for older adults to enter. Many of them have always considered technology to be something entirely alien to their lives. However, now that the training is so widely and easily available, many older people are coming to realise that they can master technology with relative ease.

Similarly, the necessary training and qualifications that are needed to work in most skilled trades have undergone a similar transformation. Older people would previously have struggled to enrol in many training programs for skilled trades, but the internet has made it easy for training providers to offer the necessary know-how and training remotely, and with few additional costs involved.

Because education and employment opportunities are now more widely available for older adults, there are a growing number of careers with old people comprising a significant portion of the workforce. There has never been a better time for older adults to pursue employment, the number and the range of good jobs for older adults mean that there is something out there to suit everyone, it’s just a case of putting the right jobs in front of the right people. We at Vercida are able to help with that.

As we age, the way that we see the world around us, and our place in it, can change considerably. Some aspects of life never seem to change, while others are in a constant state of flux. Worrying about employment is something that we typically associate with our younger years, but which is increasingly affecting people of an older age as well. There is now a general expectation that people will work for a longer period of lives than previously, as reflected by a rising age of retirement.

Many of those who try to find work in their older years are surprised at just how difficult it can be, even with years of experience under their belts. However, with some perseverance, and by taking advantage of Vercida’s extensive database of jobs, it is possible to find the perfect careers for older men and women. It is never too late to embark upon a new career path or to seek out a job in an entirely new field.  Helping older adults to find fulfilling jobs and guiding them along new and exciting career paths is important to us and we have plenty of jobs for older adults to choose from!
