Celebrating Intersectionality Month with DCMS!

Category: Staff Network Group

Intersectionality

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) is delighted to be part of Vercida's Intersectionality Month, a special occasion where we celebrate the rich tapestry of diversity that shapes our society - and our organisation.

Intersectionality recognises how an individual’s identity is shaped by interconnected and overlapping aspects of their social and cultural characteristics, such as race, gender, sexual orientation, class, disability, and more. With that in mind, Intersectionality Month is a time to reflect upon the myriad of identities that comprise our world, and to recognise the unique experiences and challenges encountered by individuals from different backgrounds. It presents an opportunity for us to come together as a community and appreciate the beauty of our shared humanity.

Although this year's Intersectionality Month may not feature specific events, discussions, or initiatives, we would like to encourage you to participate in your own way. Here are some suggestions on how you can get involved:

1. Share Your Story: Utilise this month as an opportunity to share your personal experiences and perspectives on intersectionality. Your story may inspire others and promote understanding.

2. Expand your Knowledge: Explore literature, documentaries, and resources that delve into the concept of intersectionality. Expanding your knowledge on this topic can broaden your understanding of the world.

3. Support Diverse Voices: At DCMS, we have a number of diverse voices across our sectors - from sportspeople, to writers, musicians, actors and creators from underrepresented backgrounds. Their work often provides unique insights and perspectives.

4. Engage in Conversations: Engage in meaningful conversations with friends, family, and colleagues about the importance of intersectionality and how we can collectively promote inclusivity.

5. Advocate for Change: Identify areas where you can advocate for more equitable policies and practices, both in your personal and professional life.

We encourage you to share your thoughts and experiences on social media using the hashtag #IntersectionalityMonthDCMS. Let's use this month as an opportunity to connect and learn from each other.

While this year's celebration may be different, we firmly believe that the spirit of Intersectionality Month remains strong. Together, we can continue to work towards a more inclusive and equitable society.

Thank you for your support in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in culture, media, and sport.
