Welcome to Pride Month 2022: a message from Haymarket’s LGBTQ+ Network in the UK and DEI Committee in the US

Welcome to Haymarket Global Pride 2022! The company has a great month ahead to both celebrate and educate employees around the world.

But first, where did Pride begin?

In 1969, in New York City, there were riots in the Stonewall Inn after relentless police raids got too much for the LGBTQ+ patrons of the bar. They’d had enough of being victimised and decided they would not take it anymore. One year later, the Gay Liberation Front (GLF) and the Gay Activists Alliance (GAA) created the Christopher Street Liberation March to honour what happened at Stonewall; a continuation of the original act of protest, with added celebration.

Over time, Pride marches rolled out across America, and then the rest of the world. In the UK, 2022 marks 50 years of Pride!

In most of the Western world Pride can serve as a party for the community to come together, but in other countries, Pride marches still function as a protest against oppressive leadership, who continue to prevent LGBTQ+ rights being protected by law.

Acknowledging both the history, and looking hopefully to the future, Haymarket is excited to launch a month-long celebration, for all employees globally to get involved with. From those in Haymarket’s LGBTQ+ DEI Network, or an ally or wanting to learn more, they have something for everyone.

So, what to expect throughout June?

The first week will delve a bit deeper into the history of Pride, looking at all the progress that’s been made over the years globally, but how much work is still needed too.

Haymarket is also launching its Pride book-swap! Employees in UK offices can make use of the books Haymarket has made available to borrow, learn and discuss among colleagues. While a selection of around 20 books have been chosen, Haymarket welcomes recommendations too from all colleagues! If there’s a LGBTQ+ related book that’s had a particular impact, made an employee learn something new, or is a particular favourite, employees are encouraged to bring it in for someone else to enjoy for a month.

It is also really important to be better educated on LGBTQ+ issues and how to be a better ally to the community. Haymarket will be publishing plenty of content as colleagues around the world discuss what Pride means to them, their own experiences, advice and more.

On 23 June, the US DEI Committee will host their latest Hay-Soirée! They’ll be discussing Milk, a biographical film based on the life of gay rights activist and politician Harvey Milk, the first openly gay person to be elected to public office in California. It’s set to be an educational, insightful and fun virtual get together.

This is just a taster of all that’s to come!
