S-J Ramage shares her experiences of being an openly bisexual woman throughout her career and working in a supportive environment for parents and carers at Teneo.

I joined Teneo as part of its acquisition of Deloitte’s UK restructuring business. Prior to the acquisition, I spent my entire career with Deloitte and held various roles in audit, transaction services and restructuring.

Today, I am a Managing Director and the Deputy Chief Risk Officer for Financial Advisory globally. Additionally, I am the Money Laundering Reporting Officer for the Financial Advisory business in the UK. I have been promoted three times in five years and I am proud to demonstrate that having a busy and balanced work and home life does not prevent career progression. 

I've been out as a bisexual woman since I started working. I am also a mother to two preschool-aged boys, which keeps me very busy. Teneo offers comprehensive family-friendly policies, including flexible working policies, which provide me with the flexibility to be there for my children when they need me, such as going to swimming lessons and leaving early to do nursery pick-ups. It’s so important to have that balance as a full-time working parent.

As a bi woman, I am proud to be Co-Chair of Pride, Teneo’s LGBTQ+ Employee Resource Group (ERG). The Pride ERG helps foster a positive mindset towards diversity and creates a network of allies and a safe environment that is free from discrimination. Our ERG helps allies connect and support one another. For example, for Pride month last year, we held drag queen bingo – it was our best-attended Thursday night drinks event of the year! 

Some might assume that my life fits neatly into a heteronormative background because I am married to a man – at first glance, my connection to a Pride group is not immediately obvious. This is why it’s so important to build awareness by openly speaking about our experiences. I am working towards a future where my children are able to grow up in a safe environment where everyone can speak up, be heard and feel welcome.

Anyone who identifies as LGBTQ+ can relate to the feeling that they must prepare to deal with the consequences of coming out in the workplace. I felt the same. But open communication on this front helps move the needle of progress both in the workplace and the wider community. I'm grateful that Teneo supports and embraces all of who I am so that I am able to grow and achieve my goals.
