Welcome to VERCIDA website.
Skip to main contentWe support a strong and vibrant Doctoral Training Programme with around 70 postgraduate researchers who will become the next generation of polar scientists. We employ highly skilled and professional logistics staff to support scientific expeditions using aircraft, ships, research stations and fieldwork.
BAS is led by its Director, Professor Jane Francis. She is advised and supported by the Director of Science, the Director of Operations and the Director of Innovation and Impact. The BAS Executive Team, the Science Strategy Team and the BAS Management Team provide the leadership, direction and management of BAS to achieve its mission.
BAS recognises the fundamental importance of developing the skills and competence of its staff. This is achieved through training, continuous professional development and annual performance appraisals. All staff who work in the polar regions undergo an annual training programme on all aspects of living and working in extreme environments.
BAS staff play a full role in the activities of the UK Arctic and Antarctic Partnership and the Association of Polar Early Career scientists. BAS strongly supports women in science.
It is BAS policy that everyone has equal opportunity for employment and advancement on the basis of their abilities, qualifications and fitness for work. Our policy aims to ensure that we make full use of the abilities of our entire workforce and recruit the most suitably qualified people from all sections of the community. BAS has been accredited with Investors in People Silver status and Athena Swan Silver award, demonstrating our commitment to professional staff management and development.
