Embracing Dyslexia: Unleashing Strengths and Overcoming Challenges with Barclays

Category: Neurodiversity

Neurodiversity

Hi, my name is Emma and I was diagnosed with dyslexia in 2017.

This means that I am not the best at spelling and I do sometimes lose focus and struggle to find the right words when speaking (although this does not stop me from talking as this is my best form of expression) I am a Business Relationship Manager based in South and West Yorkshire and I have been working for Barclays since 2007. I am a very social person, but I have always known that I thought from a different angle.

Outside of Barclays, I am married and a mum of two lovely daughters - they keep me busy! I love spending time with them, especially creative time, where we all sketch and draw together. I am a creative person and I have had my own business for 8 years creating and designing clothing and accessories.

When I first started my career I often used to think that I had to try harder than everybody else - I couldn't explain why, but I just had this feeling that I was masking myself by trying to fit in. After being diagnosed, it took me a while to get my head around it, but I then started to do a lot of research into dyslexia and found that I really identified with the strengths dyslexic people have. I listened to podcasts by famous dyslexic people such as Richard Branson and my confidence grew. I realised that dyslexia is just part of who I am and that I am excellent at problem-solving, I'm a visual thinker and that I have a knack of seeing the finished idea.

After learning more about the strength of dyslexia, I held an event for businesses to understand the strength of neurodivergent people, which I'm really proud of. I invited neurodivergent business owners and CEOs to talk about their challenges and how they became successful.

Barclays have really supported me along my journey and I feel like I can bring my whole self to work, with people seeing the real me and the skills that I can bring to the table. Dyslexia doesn't define me, it's just part of who I am.

I am Emma. This is me.
