The theme of 2019’s National Apprenticeship Week is ‘Blaze a Trail’ which is extremely apt as I’m the current Organisational Development & People (ODP) Apprentice here at Essex County Council.
As one of the first successful apprentices in this function I am not just blazing a trail for Organisational Development and People but setting an example to other functions on what an apprentice can bring to a service.
My role as ODP Apprentice is vast and ever-changing as I will be moving around each area of ODP. I have started with Resourcing in my first couple of months, so I can settle in to Essex County Council in the same team as my Line Manager whilst I get to know the whole of ODP while learning all that Resourcing has to offer.
This is an exciting time to be a part of Essex County Council with the recent launch of our People Plan. We want to create the workforce of the future and fulfil new strategies in creating a more dynamic and efficient way of working.
It’s been great to witness the positive changes so far and play some small part in assisting with the next steps of our transformation. As a part of my apprenticeship I am also studying for my Level 3 CIPD qualification which will kickstart my career in HR. It’s a balancing act with tasks I am given at work and studying and completing assignments within my 37 hour work week. I really enjoy this aspect as I can exercise my time management/organisation skills and I have plenty of variety in my work days. I would recommend completing an Apprenticeship to people of all ages and in all industries. It’s an excellent way of developing your skills, developing your career and creating invaluable contacts for the future.
