Find out more about life as a graduate at Essex County Council by reading this article with our Graduate Procurement Trainee, Katie Elgie
What attracted you to Essex County Council?
I always liked the idea of working in the public sector but had never given any real thought to the council. It was only when I saw the job spec, the super-fast progression opportunities & competitive salary that I even considered it. Learning more I really appreciated the passionate people who worked here. It’s also always been big on flexible working, more so than any other employer I have encountered, so that was a plus!
What opportunities are there for progression within your role?
I’m on a two year graduate scheme, at the end of which I’m expected to obtain a role as a category and contract manager. The support is amazing, trying to ensure that I’m covering every single base that I’ll need to progress. Senior managers also regularly discuss opportunities beyond that. It’s constantly reinforced that you are the future leaders of the public sector, something which I find really exciting.
What is your biggest achievement since joining ECC?
I was a key member of the working group for PPE during the COVID-19 Pandemic. This involved every aspect of getting PPE to social care settings. From purchasing the items, to distributing them, to training staff on how to use and allocate them, creating processes for doing so and much more. It was stressful, but such a rewarding process to be getting PPE to our frontline workers and helping to protect the people of Essex. The trust you’re given is outstanding and you’re constantly encouraged to push yourself and learn as you go.
Would advise would you give to someone considering ECC as a future employer?
Do it. It’s not necessarily the first place you would look when leaving university, but the sheer progression opportunities could not be rivalled anywhere else in my opinion. You are treated as a key member of the team; your opinion is valued, and your work and home life maintain their distinctions. It’s the most supportive environment I can imagine. I’ve learned so much in my year here and cannot wait to see what the future holds. Finally, in the difficult post-pandemic world, I truly believe that the public sector is the best and most reliable place to kick start your career.
