As Earth Month 2024 concludes, we are reflecting on progress made through our efforts.
“American Express is hard at work to advance climate solutions – both in our own operations and for customers and communities – to support the transition to a low-carbon future. While this is a year-round focus for us, Earth Month is a key moment to highlight our efforts through initiatives like our Green2Gether program, sustainability solutions and long-standing support for small businesses,” said Madge Thomas, President of the American Express Foundation and Head of Corporate Sustainability.
Below read about our recent progress towards making a positive, long-term impact for our colleagues, customers, and communities.
Trees for Cities
This week Team Amex volunteers were supporting our partner Trees for Cities, in London and Sussex with important maintenance of young urban trees to encourage their growth.
These Earth Month events form part of our year-round Serve2Gether, colleague volunteering programme and our commitment to Trees for Cities to add a green canopy to UK urban areas to inspire people to plant, nurture, and celebrate trees.
Amex Supports Recovery from The Maui Wildfires
American Express previously announced on April 17 that it was launching applications for the Maui Small Business Recovery Grant Program to help support the local businesses impacted by the catastrophic Maui wildfires of August 2023. In partnership with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation and Chamber of Commerce Hawaii, the program will help 100 small businesses impacted by the Maui wildfires and will provide up to $500,000 in funding along with business coaching to help with recovery. The Maui Chamber of Commerce and LahainaTown Action Committee will assist with local efforts.

As part of the company’s year-round Green2Gether program, American Express colleagues joined a series of non-profit led volunteer events throughout the month, participating in activities from tree planting to park and habitat maintenance and coastal waste clean ups. Green2Gether gatherings took place in locations including New York City, Tokyo, Salt Lake City, Toronto, among others.
Earth Hour
“Goodwill has not only helped New Yorkers re-use and re-purpose goods for many decades but has made a difference in people’s lives through removing stigma for mental illness, job training in healthcare and employment programs,” said Katy Gaul-Stigge, President & CEO at Goodwill Industries of Greater New York and Northern New Jersey, who joined Amex colleagues for the event to share more about the Goodwill programs and environmental efforts.
