Department for Transport: A day in the life of Business Support Admin Apprentice
The role of Business Support Assistant covers a wide range of business support activities carried out across the teams and units that form the directorate.
A typical day in the life of a Business Support Assistant might start with forms to complete to set up an account for a new joiner or reflecting the staff changes in a team which have to be captured for IT purposes (distribution lists, access to folders etc.). It would continue with preparation of Programme Board papers which are collected in their electronic form and sent to reprographics to print ahead of the meeting.
Later in the morning ad-hoc room bookings would be made for meetings as requested by senior managers and team leaders. Before lunch, questions relating to storage space, lockers and pool laptop allocations would be dealt with.
After lunch the requests for specialist software by individual users would be addressed along with distributing relevant information (system difficulties, health and safety information etc) directorate-wide. There will often be the need to attend meetings and take minutes or provide general admin support to Directors or Deputy Directors. Later in the afternoon, a number of invoices would be goods receipted as cover for the requisitioner who could be away on leave. This would be followed by updates to the electronic filing system upon request from a member of a team/unit.
