Last month, DCMS held an array of events and sessions in line with the theme of Disability History Month, which was ‘Disability and Hidden Impairment and Disability Sex and Relationships’. DCMS held information sessions on Neurodiversity with guidance on how to support neurodiverse colleagues. Also, as part of an ongoing series at DCMS, they have highlighted staff members' individual stories on living with a disability, and what being disability confident looks like.
Sarah, DCMS’s Permanent Secretary and a Civil Service Disability Champion, also met with Paralympian swimmer Ellie Simmonds OBE. They live streamed their conversation to all DCMS colleagues where they discussed her career highlights and leadership qualities, her thoughts on how to create inclusive organisations and her role on the Board of the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee. DCMS also live streamed a Parliamentary Group discussion on assistive and accessible technology in the Civil Service to create awareness within the department.
DCMS are proud to be an accredited Disability Confident Leader and will continue to celebrate staff who identify as disabled by continuing their commitment and passion to ensure that all members of staff who identify as disabled have the right mechanisms and work culture in place to be able to work authentically and thrive within DCMS.
Although Disability Confidence Month has come to an end, DCMS will continue to platform the voices of individuals with disabilities at DCMS and keep the #PurpleLightOn.
