January 2023

As the final echoes of Auld Lang Syne rang through Scotland, Hogmanay 2023 became a poignant testament to the power of tradition and community. In the face of uncertainties, Hogmanay celebrations across Scotland illuminated the night with joy and unity. From the lively festivities in Edinburgh's streets to the intimate gatherings in remote areas, the spirit of Hogmanay reflected the resilience of communities coming together to embrace hope and renewal.

February 2023

In 2023 DCMS underwent a transformative shift known as the Machinery of Government Change(MOG). This strategic initiative changed the department from being the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport to the Department of Culture, Media and Sport  and reshaped the government’s approach to cultural preservation, media regulation, and sports development. The MOG Change fostered inclusive cultural practices, and positioned DCMS for sustained growth. This transformative effort ensures the department’s relevance and impact in an ever-evolving global landscape, with lasting effects on its adaptability and forward-looking approach.

March 2023

The Youth Investment Fund launched with a budget exceeding £300 million, which aims to increase annual youth engagement by 45,000. £95 million has been allocated to 43 organisations for developing and refurbishing youth and activity centres. As part of the National Youth Guarantee, it emphasises life-changing opportunities, including activities, adventures, and volunteering

April 2023

The London Marathon 2023 witnessed a triumphant return, drawing thousands of runners to the iconic course through the heart of the city. May 2023

In May 2023, Europe and the rest of the world witnessed a spectacular convergence of tradition and entertainment with the King's coronation and Eurovision. The coronation ceremony, steeped in regal splendour, marked the ascension of a new monarch to the throne, captivating the continent with its grandeur and symbolism. While Eurovision 2023, took centre stage as artists from across Europe showcased their talents. June 2023

Glastonbury 2023, one of the world's premier music festivals, unfolded in a triumphant spectacle of music, arts, and culture. The iconic event featured an eclectic lineup of global superstars and emerging talents across various genres, captivating a massive audience. With its immersive atmosphere and legendary stages, Glastonbury showcased unparalleled performances, fostering a sense of unity and celebration.

July 2023

Celebrating a decade of progress, the UK marked the 10th anniversary of Equal Marriage. In 2013, DCMS spearheaded the ground-breaking Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act, a pivotal legislation that granted equal marriage rights to same-sex couples. This historic moment symbolised a commitment to inclusivity, diversity, and social progress, fostering a more inclusive society. The anniversary reflects on a decade of positive change and the pivotal role played by DCMS in championing equal rights and fostering a more inclusive and tolerant society.

August 2023

The Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2023 unfolded as a vibrant celebration of the arts, showcasing an array of innovative performances across theatre, comedy, music, and more. As the world's largest arts festival, it provided a dynamic platform for emerging and established artists, captivating audiences with its diverse and boundary-pushing acts. From thought-provoking dramas to side-splitting comedy, the festival embraced creativity in every form.

September 2023

The WASD Video Game Expo emerged as a dynamic showcase of interactive entertainment, uniting gaming enthusiasts and industry professionals. In a bustling atmosphere, the expo featured cutting-edge game releases, virtual reality experiences, and engaging panel discussions. Attendees immersed themselves in the latest gaming technologies, exploring diverse genres and platforms.

October 2023

Notting Hill Carnival, an iconic celebration of Caribbean culture in London, pulsated with rhythm and colour. The annual event transformed the streets into an array of music, dance, and elaborate costumes, attracting revellers from diverse backgrounds. Steel drums echoed through the air as lively parades and sound systems created an electric atmosphere. Not just a carnival but a cultural spectacle, it embraced diversity, showcasing Caribbean traditions and fostering unity.

November 2023

In 2023, DCMS ceremonials team and a vast number of DCMS volunteers organised Remembrance Sunday which continued its tradition of honouring military personnel who sacrificed their lives in conflicts. The solemn observance, held on the second Sunday of November, featured memorial services, wreath-laying ceremonies, and public gatherings across the United Kingdom and Commonwealth nations. People paid respects through a poignant two-minute silence at 11am, coinciding with the armistice that ended World War I.

December 2023

The National Lottery Big Bash closed off the year in style and five lucky employees got to attend and welcome in the new year in style. The event celebrated and reflected on the moments that shaped 2023 through live music, exciting performances and heart-warming surprises. DCMS employee Danielle Smith who won tickets said “I took my mum. She is the biggest Take That fan. She said the experience was up there with one of the best nights of her life. I had a brilliant time too and am very grateful to have been able to go!”
