Teneo UK Hosts Conversation on Balancing Caring and Work

Our Families and Carers ERG was delighted to welcome Madeleine Starr from Carers UK, a local non-profit organisation, to join a panel on combining care and work in our London office. Fellow panellists included some of our Teneo colleagues who balance work and (often challenging) caring responsibilities.  

 

 

Carers look after loved ones who are older, disabled, physically or mentally ill, or suffering from an addiction. The UK statistics on caring are astounding:

• Over 1.9 million people became carers last year.
• 2.5 million carers are juggling care with paid work.
• The value of unpaid care in England and Wales is now estimated to be £162 billion, exceeding that of the entire NHS budget in England for health service spending.
• 600 carers a day give up work to care, creating a big impact on staff retention across the labour market.

During our panel discussion, Madeleine described how employers can provide support for carers within their workforce by understanding and recognising their situation, enabling flexibility and signposting to practical information. The Carers UK website contains a wealth of information and advice, along with some useful online tools.
