Race and Ethnicity at Northumbria University

We are members of Advance HE’s Race Equality Charter (REC). We are working to submit an application to the Charter, and are currently developing our Race Equality Action Plan to launch in 2024.

Our work on Race Equality is led by our Race Equality Steering Group, chaired by our Deputy Vice-Chancellor.

To ensure we hear from a range of voices, colleagues continue to be invited to join our consultative group. Feedback is also invited from our staff and students, through the BAME Network (whose co-Leads continue to meet each semester with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor), through surveys listening groups and email. Engagement with external organisations also supports our activity, enabling us to provide training to colleagues and to build connections in the community.

We are signatories of the Gypsy, Traveller, Roma, Showman & Boaters (GTRSB) Pledge.

To respond to the under-representation of global majority colleagues in leadership roles, there have been new leadership development opportunities during 2022-23, and reverse-mentorship and shadowing opportunities developed for 2023-24

We reported our ethnicity pay gap for the first time in 2023.

Northumbria University's Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic (BAME) Network was established for colleagues from Black and minoritised backgrounds to create a voice and contribute towards creating an inclusive and equitable culture within the University.
