Disability Support at Maritime and Coastguard Agency
We run the UK's only national emergency response service, and we need the widest possible range of people to do it. Disabled people belong in every part of the MCA, from the operations rooms and the coast to survey, policy, IT, finance and HR.
Applying to us
Meet the essential requirements of the role and you're guaranteed an interview under the Disability Confident Scheme. That is a commitment we hold ourselves to, not a line in an advert.
Tell us what you need and we'll put it in place. When you apply through Civil Service Jobs we ask directly whether you need an adjustment at any stage. That could be a different interview time, location or format. Questions in writing, or in advance. Extra time in a test. A sign language interpreter. A supported test session. Advice on assistive technology. The list isn't fixed, so ask for what genuinely helps you perform at your best.
You don't need a diagnosis to ask, and you don't need to have decided whether the word disabled applies to you. If something in our process would put you at a disadvantage, tell us and we'll look at it.
Visible or non-visible, it makes no difference to us. Where a condition would substantially disadvantage you in our process, we have a duty to change how we do things, and we take it seriously.
Once you're here
Adjustments don't stop at the offer letter. If you're disabled when you join, or you become disabled or develop a long-term health condition while you're with us, we'll put adjustments in place so you can keep working, developing and progressing. Your line manager is the first conversation, and most things get sorted there. [Confirm: workplace adjustment passport, and the route when a manager can't resolve it.]
Flexible and variable hours, part-time working, job shares, home working and adjusted shift patterns are available wherever the role allows, and special leave covers hospital appointments.
If something isn't right, Speak Up is our confidential route for raising discrimination, harassment or victimisation, with HR alongside you until it's resolved. Our 24-hour Employee Assistance Programme is free and confidential.
What we ask of you
Tell us what you need, early and plainly. We'd far rather change something at application stage than lose someone good over a barrier we could have removed.
