What Our Members Say About Us

On our Consultancy and Advice...

“I just wanted to say a big thank you on behalf of my team for your time, expertise and advice. We really appreciated your contribution and thought to the conversation and it has given us a great next step approach.”

On our Training...

"I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed the training on the Equality Act yesterday. It was really interesting and the trainer was very good."
Financial Ombudsman Service

Unconscious Bias Workshops

"This was a very interesting and informative seminar. I knew nothing about unconscious bias when I arrived and I came away with a clear overview of what it means and the impact it can have as well as practical advice on reducing these impacts within an organisation. It was well led in an entertaining and thought provoking way. I would recommend this to anyone interested in this topic."
Liz Chappell, Ministry of Justice “More than met expectation – mainly due to seminar leader, Dan Robertson, but also a great mix of research headlines and practical application in the workplace. Great mix of theory and practice. Dan Robertson very impressive facilitator.”
Tanya Mukherjee, ITV

On our Employer Guides...

“I just wanted to express our thanks for preparing such a comprehensive guide of religions and beliefs, which is so easy to understand and accessible. I think this guide is perfect for any workplace, and as it includes such things as death rites and dress codes, it will also prove most useful for officers. You have saved us a lot of hard work!”
Jen Hayden, Diversity Officer, West Midlands Police

Unconscious bias: What is it and why should I care: Hard Science and Hard lessons?

Over the last few decades new research has shed light on the working of the human brain and the concept of implicit associations or what is commonly known as unconscious bias.

This new field of science has profound consequences for the way businesses think about how they attract, recruit and retain their talent. Together our work on unconscious bias is divided into three core areas covering research, training and consultancy.

Current research: People management and unconscious bias

We have lead on a unique piece of research that seeks to investigate if managers manage and develop team members that are similar to them more effectively than those who are different to them. The research also investigated the perceptions of team members: do they believe that line managers manage and develop them based on similarities and differences? The methodology consisted of 18 pairs of managers & staff members completing a number of Implicitly® tests, one to one interviews with 36 managers and their staff members and pairs completing the Manager-Staff member relationship quality (LMX) questionnaire.

Key Headlines findings

  • Bias is more likely to manifest as behaviour when people were under emotional load, such as stress.
  • Managers and staff were concerned about causing offence or appearing intrusive about personal lives. Managers were afraid to ask questions for fear of offending.
  • Some unconscious biases were also see as being active against the ‘own’ group especially Gender, Women with Children and Female Bodyweight.
  • Openness, Honesty and Trust seem to be the basis of good relationships when working with people of difference.

Our unconscious bias workshops

We run in-house and open programmes under the title of ‘Measuring & Managing Unconscious Bias’ These programmes are designed and facilitated by Dan Robertson. Our unconscious bias workshops cover the science and neurology of unconscious bias, the impact of bias on individuals and organisational culture and performance together with practical tips for managing unconscious bias and related behaviours in areas such as recruitment, performance management, workforce retention and talent development. Typically, a programme may follow this format:

  1. The science of Fast & Slow Thinking: Drawing on new scientific evidence we stress the ‘dual-process’ model of the workings of the human brain.
  2. What is Unconscious bias? We provide an overview of the science behind unconscious bias, covering the neurology of bias and key concepts such as Affinity Bias and Stereotype Threat. This part of the workshop is designed to provide an overview of the nature of bias and how implicit associations can and do impact on individual and organisational attitudes, behaviours and decisions.
  3. Unconscious bias within your organisational context: Here we use key diversity demographics and other data to facilitate a conversation on how bias may be impacting on your businesses decision-making processes.
  4. Effective tools and techniques for identifying and reducing unconscious bias: We will introduce you to Implicitly ® the only unconscious bias test that is able to measure the relationship between implicit associations and behaviour at work. Our most recent workshops have been attended by major national and international organisations.
