ABOUT

Supported Internship Programme – Shipley College

Background

In spite of substantial funding in special education, the overall outcome of people with a disability or learning difficulty has not improved much in terms of getting a job. Funding for Colleges did not appear to be enabling colleges to offer courses that have a strong focus on employment; therefore in 2012 the government introduced a new initiative where they aimed to bridge the gap between education and work.

Shipley College was one of 15 colleges around the country that was selected to trial a new government initiative called Supported Internship Project. The project at Shipley College was a great success as the majority of our learners gained employment.

Therefore because of the very positive outcome of the trial, Shipley College have decided to continue with it as a major programme, the Supported Internship Programme (S.I.P.)

What is Supported Internship

The Supported Internship is a work-based study programme that bridges the gap between education and real work, providing young adults with opportunities for a more fulfilled life. During the programme (approx 6 months, 16h work/week) learners are given 1 on 1 training on the job at a chosen employer premises, supported 1 on 1 by a dedicated job coach from the college. If both parties – learner and employer, are satisfied at the end of the programme, then the learner would be offered employment.

Our mission

We strongly believe in diversity and that there is a job for everyone who wants to work regardless of individual barriers. We actively promote inclusivity to employers and by working closely together we support them to have a seamless transition in achieving a more inclusive and diverse workforce.

Why chose Supported Internship

We have been running our Supported Internship Programme since 2012 with many successful outcomes which have been recognized by local employers and politicians. It is a well developed, flexible programme and can be adopted by any businesses / employers who want to be part of it. It is a great opportunity for employers to be involved in their local community’s wellbeing by offering employment to people from a wider demography.
