Job Introduction

Engineering Operations is part of BBC Engineering.  The department actively helps BBC programme makers create and deliver great content across radio, TV and online.  Engineering Operations is principally responsible for supporting live and recorded programme output all day, every day across News Group, Radio and BBC North in Salford. As a support department, our role is to make life as easy as possible for those using the BBC's technology, while minimising the amount of Licence Fee we consume in doing so.

The Technology Support group within Engineering Operations provides support for studios and broadcast infrastructure, digital production systems and PC and Mac desktops across domestic and international offices.

Role Responsibility
Team Leads manage a team of technical support staff who are responsible for delivering a high quality technology support service on behalf of the BBC.  They are responsible for the day-to-day prioritisation and direction of the operational workload, ensuring that broadcast equipment and systems meet targets for availability, performance and safety.  It is essential that the role holder understands the needs of the business and the pressures faced by production teams.  The Team Lead will take the lead role during a major technology incident or delegate appropriately within the team.

Team Leads will provide predominantly dayside cover but maybe asked to do the occasional 24/7 cover. Dayside Team Leaders will have to be prepared to be flexible at times to meet the needs of the support operation.  Team Leaders can also be expected to work across multiple- sites and some travel should be expected.

Are you the right candidate?
As a Team Lead, you will have:
  • Experience of supporting broadcast technology within a 24/7 output environment, including managing incidents, problems and technical changes in a demanding customer service environment
  • Ability to manage a diverse team of people and to communicate clearly with a range of people, including the ability to explain and discuss complex technical issues using a range of styles, tools and techniques which are appropriate to the audience
  • Understanding of good management practice and experience of managing teams to deliver high standards of work
  • A track record of managing performance and coaching others. Experience of carrying out appraisals, delivering feedback, running meetings and having constructive conversations with team members.
  • A sound understanding of the technology used in multi-media broadcasting environments
  • Knowledge and experience of ITIL service management good practice and customer service experience
  • Knowledge of BBC employment and financial policies.
  • Experience of effectively planning, prioritising and co-ordinating own and team activities
  • Experience of managing safely and knowledge of health and safety legislation and BBC guidelines relevant to technology support activities particularly electrical safety.
  • Experience of implementing process change and new ways of working
  • Demonstrable understanding of the pressures and demands of a fast-moving, broadcast environment.
  • Excellent IT skills, with the ability to run and write operational reports

Desirable
  • A keen interest in, and an understanding of, technological developments and their application to broadcast output.
  • Understanding of the BBC's vision and objectives
  • Experience as a broadcast support engineer or analyst (or equivalent)
  • ITIL V3 Foundation certificate (or equivalent)
  • IOSH safety management qualification (or equivalent)
