About the opportunity
Our Water Catchment Management sector provides a focus for advising our clients on delivering sustainable drainage, flood risk management and civil engineering solutions. Water Catchment Management comprises in excess of 400 staff based in the UK and Europe, but with reach into the Middle East, Australasia and America.
To meet our growing UK business needs and future development aspirations we are looking for a civil engineer with significant experience in the development of outline and detailed designs for surface water management solutions to be based in our Exeter office (other locations would be considered for the right candidate, including Bristol, Reading and Leeds).

You will be joining a team of seven surface water management professionals in Exeter and will also sit in the wider discipline of 50 surface water management professionals across the UK & Europe. Whilst these teams are physically located in certain offices, this does not mean it will limit you to only working with those in your team, as we operate virtual teams to ensure the right skills are brought to each project. At present all staff are based in their homes due to the restrictions on movement as a result of COVID working collaboratively using tools such as Microsoft Teams.
As a senior engineer you will take a leading role on the design of projects for the Environment Agency, Lead Local Flood Authorities and other public and private clients including Water and Sewerage Companies, Highways England, Network Rail, HS2 and Major Airports. You will also work with other disciplines within the group (flood risk, rivers, hydrology, hydrogeology, hydroinfomatics, water sciences, and geomorphology) to deliver projects for major infrastructure clients. Here's What You'll Need:
Coordinating multi-disciplinary teams to produce outline and detailed design for surface water management projects including SuDS / green infrastructure, piped drainage, and design for exceedance projects
Developing Surface Water Management Plans;
Production of Flood Risk Assessments and associated drainage strategies;
- Design of;
- Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS)
- Gravity piped drainage networks
- Design for exceedance
- Flow control structures
- Production of Contracts and Technical specifications
- Mentoring junior engineers through their technical and professional development
- Checking and reviewing calculations and technical deliverables, including hydraulic models
- Production of designers risk assessments
- Management of drawing production
- Supporting the Head of Discipline for Surface Water Management to share best practice across the UK & Europe
- Civil Engineering degree and working towards MICE, CWEM, or similar status
- Working knowledge of relevant legislation, planning policy, guides and design standards relating to SuDS, green infrastructure, drainage, and surface water management
- Practical design experience of SuDS / green infrastructure, and gravity piped drainage;
- Competent user of Civil 3D software or equivalent
- Demonstrable knowledge of Safety in Design and Designers responsibilities under CDM
- Ability to develop, price and agree scope of services
- Excellent report writing and presentation skills
