Role purpose

The Colt Optical core network is the fundamental and vital building block of IQ Network. The Colt Optical network is continually growing and evolving to deliver services over 100G+. Our advanced infrastructure means our customers benefit from our flexible, responsive and reliable services day in, day out. Our stringent service level agreements for our on-net customers are one of the most demanding in the industry.

This role of Senior Specialist is crucial to maintain Colt's market leading position. The candidate is expected to demonstrate their subject matter expertise on optical technologies, market and industry awareness and network architecture, ensure cost efficient solutions are identified, developed and introduced, keep in close relationship with external partners (such as equipment vendors and customers or prospects) and internal teams within Engineering, but also towards Product Management, Sales, Operations and other areas. The candidate is expected to drive and evolve Colt Optical network strategy and roadmap, to be able to offer the products that are demanded from the market, at lower unit cost points.

Key accountabilities
  • Own and drive initiatives according to new Colt products and/or future technology adoption at Colt, add into Optical Engineering roadmap - deliver on time, quality and budget
  • Define new and cost efficient Network Architecture, both on the wavelength (100G+) and Sub-wave level, build appropriate cost models and simulations to compare the different options and select the most appropriate one
  • Follow R&D from both industry and academic side as a key expert in the Optical Technology area, to identify new trends and technologies in an early phase
  • Represent Colt Optical Engineering team at standardisation and industry bodies like OIF, ITU-T, IEEE - participate at summits and conferences as a speaker with profound presentations
  • Keep close contact to other teams within Optical Engineering and convince team members from appropriate priority settings and the need to embrace change towards new technology
  • Maintain the Colt Network Architecture Guide, update with new technologies, keep the document easily readable and understandable with a good balance between text and diagrams, at a decent technology level.
  • Act as a technical point of contact from Engineering for the Product Management team, to define and refine new Optical services - lead the way to innovation
  • Push for the development towards software defined optical networks, incl. collaboration with OSS / BSS teams and IT/Security, drive the way towards Optical On-Demand services via portal & API
  • Engage with Optical vendors and drive vendor roadmaps - clearly track necessary features and deliverables, expectations, timelines from vendors
  • Provide initial support internally within Engineering team to help the adoption of new technologies
  • Demonstrate subject matter expertise - have a broader view of how various new technologies could help Colt to deliver new and attractive services at the lowest possible cost point, but still manageable from delivery and operations perspective
  • Keep a close contact to Optical Analysts and an eye on technical publications in the optical space
  • Align new technologies with peers from other technology areas such as Packet and Voice
  • Demonstrate commercial acumen - assess and articulate the commercial impact
  • Articulate status, progress, challenges on project activities to stakeholders and senior management
  • Drive continual improvement and form a strategy to enhance the optical network


Key performance indicators
  • Efficiency in new initiatives, for new services (revenue streams) and/or new architectures to reduce capex/opex and ultimately lower cost
  • Attendance at industry bodies, congresses, as a delegate or speaker
  • Adoption of new proposed technologies within Colt, incl. real field deployments and materialised commercial benefits
  • Reduced unit cost of service
  • Deliver the end-to-end architecture vision and make sure it's understood by stakeholders
  • Colt optical services are innovative and meet/exceed customer requirements


Skills & Experience
  • 15+ years' experience in telecom Optical and Ethernet network engineering, strategy and architecture - with an emphasis on layer-1 technologies
  • Technical expertise on optical components across DWDM and mature SDH technologies. Exposure to Carrier Ethernet and IP services would be valuable
  • Experience in large scale optical network design involving DWDM : ROADM, FOADM, EDFA, Raman, dispersion compensation and OTN
  • Experience in creating forward-looking architecture to expedite delivery of new services including disaster recovery aspects for relevant management system
  • Experience in testing, validation and troubleshooting DWDM infrastructure from vendors such as Ciena / Adva / Infinera. Knowledge of DWDM, SDH network alarms, event and performance analysis
  • Experience in OTDR analysis, fiber characterization, handling testers, Optical Spectrum Analyser
  • Understanding of telecommunication networking standards (ITU-T etc.) is essential
  • Market and industry awareness in the Optical technology space, with past, current and upcoming technologies. Exposure to publishing industry facing technical / white papers will be an advantage
  • The right balance of technical and commercial know-how and cost-focused thinking, to achieve new innovative solutions at best cost points
  • Experience with global telecom service provider will be an advantage
  • Exposure to directly or collaboratively design and/or implement vendor-agnostic orchestration / automation system would be an advantage
  • Knowledge in scripting, automation would be an advantage
