Job description

Jacobs is currently searching for Senior EC&I Engineers to support our design work on the Small Modular Reactor (SMR) Project.

The SMR project is a collaboration between several UK organisations to develop a modular reactor design that will become a key part of the UK's energy supply in the future, applying innovative techniques, modular construction and advanced manufacturing techniques to develop a solution that will drive down the cost of electricity generation from nuclear power.

The SMR project provides a unique opportunity to be involved in UK-developed nuclear new-build and the project has secured significant government investment to support this concept design phase. Jacobs are a key member of the collaboration and are building a team to lead the E, C & I engineering on the project.

This is an exciting, challenging, nuclear project requiring expertise in all aspects of E, C & I relating to nuclear plant and large power generating plant. Based out of Jacobs' North West offices, these roles will support the development of E, C & I systems for this new reactor design. This is an exciting opportunity with a remit for strong technical delivery.

Technical Capabilities
  • Degree qualified / Chartered Engineer (or the ability to attain CEng)
  • A background in electrical systems in a highly-regulated domain
  • Detailed knowledge of grid connection requirements, electrical distribution and emergency supplies (Diesel, gas turbine and UPS)
  • Knowledge of control and performance requirements for a power station turbine generator
  • Familiarity with nuclear reactor technologies, particularly knowledge of the electrical systems for pressurised water reactor designs, would be desirable
  • Functional safety knowledge (IEC 61508 or IEC 61513) including the basic concepts of defence in depth design approaches
  • Ability to specify electrical distribution systems from 24V DC to 400 kV AC including requirements for operational safety and fault protection
  • Knowledge of the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) Safety Assessment Principles (SAPs) relevant to electrical equipment and the associated Technical Assessment Guides (TAGs) 003 and 103
  • An understanding of the Claim, Argument, Evidence (CAE) approach to safety case presentation would be an advantage
  • Knowledge of the qualification of electrical equipment for safety systems would be an advantage
  • Full project lifecycle experience, including requirements capture and management, Verification and Validation etc.
  • Ability to understand requirements and ensure that the design meets them
  • Comfortable working at a high level to ensure performance, cost and quality requirements are met but also able to achieve detailed requirement delivery
  • Knowledge of standards compliance, certification, earthing and equipment layout and segregation issues including EMC
  • Able to act as, or support the activities of an "Intelligent Customer" as defined in the ONR SAPs
  • Takes responsibility for nuclear safety with the ability to challenge appropriately
Role Requirements
  • Assessment of technical options to achieve the most cost effective overall solution
  • Development of electrical design philosophy documents for the power station including Basis of Design Documents and Design Guides
  • Development of electrical architecture including single line diagrams, layout requirements and load lists
  • Interaction with other disciplines and review of their input documents including Process Flow Diagrams, design requirements, hazard analysis, layout drawings etc.
  • Provide assistance to other organisations with regard to the specification of the electrical requirements for their equipment
  • Development of the design of the power station electrical systems (including standby generation) to ensure that safety, regulatory and availability requirements are met
  • Inclusion of requirements for operability such as response to grid load fluctuation, facilities for system testing without impacting plant operation and maintenance requirements
  • Consideration of modular construction techniques within the design to facilitate low cost station build
  • Take account of obsolescence and lifetime issues during architecture and component selection
  • Development of a testing and maintenance philosophy
  • Generate ideas for implementation of latest technology / techniques to ensure lowest cost and highest performance for the station


Other Requirements

  • The role will be predominantly based in Warrington but a willingness to travel to and work at the sites of other group members (including Derby) is required
  • Ability to identify activities that need to be completed and plan and prioritise work
  • Excellent communication skills across a range of organisational levels including high quality written technical reports
  • Works well with others and builds and maintains relationships
  • Ability to obtain security clearance to basic level is a requirement of the role
