In January 2018 the BBC went live with WhatsOn, the BBC's Broadcast Management System (BMS), this system sits at the heart of how we commission and broadcast most of our TV content. The system allows us to plan, commission, schedule and transmit our television content.
WhatsOn makes the connection between the BBC and our audiences so that we can understand, even better, the relationship between our content and audience.
Our newly created Senior Database Engineer role is to work with the various BMSS delivery project, data architect and TV Business Systems Support (including the NI Support) teams to act as the central hub for managing and supporting the core production / development Oracle databases and environments.
Reporting to the Principle Systems Engineer, this role will work closely with the delivery project technical delivery and TV Business Systems Support teams.
- SQL performance tuning. Create and run repeatable tests. Produce testing summary results
- Recommend Indexing and Statistics based upon performance test results.
- Research, recommend and implement Oracle database recommendations after thorough testing.
- Produce database maintenance scripts, procedures and functions e.g. clear down procs.
- Identify, introduce and improve processes with automation.
- Implement and test database changes in the various Development Database Environments.
- Liaise with Production DBA team to push the changes through the development and Production environments.
- Maintain documentation (via Confluence) and create electronic change controls when required.
- Support environment refreshes, trouble shoot any errors raised by Data Pump imports or exports.
- Raise and maintain Oracle tickets when required.
- Experience of working in a team that delivers an important service
- Work with other team members to build database knowledge
- Develop and implement routine updates
- Evaluate change requests
Are you the right candidate?
To be successful in this role you must have experience of managing Oracle environment instances that support development, testing and training. You should have excellent working knowledge of the functionality and capabilities of Oracle 12c databases. You must have excellent working knowledge of database administration, database management and data manipulation.
Finally you should have experience of creating technical documentation and document version control. Experience with products below will be advantageous:
Oracle RDBMS 11g/12c, QL, PL/SQL, Oracle Enterprise Manager, Data Guard, Microsoft Windows Server,Database design and performance tuning
