Job description


Based in the world leading composites research institute, the Bristol Composites Institute (ACCIS), at the University of Bristol, this is a great opportunity to be part of a world class team developing a novel and cutting-edge manufacturing technology to deliver transformative technology to the very rapidly developing and expanding UK's advanced composites industry.


This EPSRC project aims at developing an innovative fibre placement technology for manufacturing defect-free complex composite structures, by enabling the Continuous Tow Shearing (CTS) process on three-dimensional surfaces. This novel technology will have a capability of eliminating the fibre wrinkling defect in the process of steering the lay-up paths, which was inevitable for producing complex composite components and is the major limitation of the current automated fibre placement (AFP) technology.


The role holder will be working on integrating the current CTS material deposition head with an industrial robot and carrying out fibre steering tests to manufacture highly complex composite components. You will work with a Research Associate who develops the head control algorithm and a CAD-based robot programming tool, but will mainly focus on validating the entire production process from the programming to manufacture and inspecting the steering quality.

The ideal candidate will have preferably a PhD in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering with strong experience in material deformation characterisation of impregnated or unimpregnated composite preforms and material modelling and with some background on computer-aided design and finite element analysis. Experience in using industrial robots is advantageous.


It is anticipated that interviews will take place shortly after the closing date
