Are you interested in playing a role in shaping the future of pharma R&D at GSK? If so, this job opportunity could be for you.

The R&D Strategy group is a newly formed dedicated unit within the R&D Strategy, Portfolio and Operations (SPO) function which is accountable for:

1. Partnering with R&D Leadership Team (RDLT) to define the R&D strategy, including:

* Defining R&D's short, medium and long term ambition (e.g. revisited every c.3 years) that is defined by internal demands and external imperatives / trends and includes how to track and measure the progress towards the ambition

* Determining / refining and articulating the path to achieve these ambitions, given where we are today (e.g. reviewed every year), ensuring critical elements to achieve this are in place ("sub-strategies"), joined up and prioritised, informing and challenging these sub-strategies based on external validation and understanding resource implications to achieve these

* Continuously considering scenarios based on internal read outs and/or external events / competitive activity, and deciding how to change course to achieve the same ambitions (ongoing activity)

2. Partnering with other functions in R&D, Rx and GSK to ensure content on GSK R&D's ambition is sufficient, and that the path to success is clear. For example, working with R&D Comms on a clear narrative and engagements with key audiences, and with the Office of the CEO on R&D content.

3. Delivering clear recommendations to defined strategic questions facing R&D - moving fluidly between achieving alignment on R&D wide strategy and focusing on detailed priority issues.

The R&D Strategy group will consist of high calibre, experienced individuals, aligned predominantly to one or more RDLT members and, depending on experience, leading project teams focusing on topics of high strategic importance to R&D or working as core members of the strategy project teams.

As R&D Strategy Development Director you will be accountable to:
• Lead elements of work on core R&D strategy questions, working directly with the VP, R&D Strategy and SVPs across R&D, strategy consultants, external stakeholders and Office of the CEO. Projects will vary significantly in nature and remit, though will typically last 3-4 months and result in concrete proposals and handover with a team responsible for strategy deployment
• Be core members of project teams of 2-4 individuals within the Strategy team (subject to the hire of further roles within the team) and liaise directly with many groups across R&D, leading multi-disciplinary matrix teams where necessary
• Actively seek information from inside and outside the business, constructing an argument/proposal/ direction of travel on key strategic projects
• Prepare and deliver presentations and/or papers for review at SPO LT
• Be active in external networks to ideate around pharma industry challenges and R&D productivity

Why You?Basic qualifications:
PhD, MBA or other post-graduate degrees in R&D, Business or Finance.
Strong experience in R&D, across 2 or more areas, and ideally Pharmaceutical industry experience more broadly.
Demonstrated clear strategic capabilities acquired through experience and track record in Strategic Consulting, applied to R&D projects or leadership of cross functional strategic projects.
Project management experience.
Comfortable and skilled communicator / presenter.
