Principal Enterprise IT Application Architect

Here at Old Mutual Wealth we are seeking a Principal Enterprise IT Application Architect to join our Group Technology Solutions team in Southampton. They will have a range of responsibilities:
  • To lead the development, maintenance, communication and implementation of Old Mutual Wealth's global technology strategy and architecture taking into account business strategy, industry direction, technology innovation and input from 3rd party delivery partners, across:
    • major business segments;
    • significant global technology domains;
  • They will influence senior executive stakeholders and be responsible for decisions which have major and far-reaching impact on the strategic direction of technology in the company, on projects and the IT delivery.

  • To ensure joined-up application, infrastructure, data or security architectures, along with associated roadmaps, are in place that supports the business and drives simplification across Old Mutual Wealth IT
  • To ensure new systems development initiatives are aligned and converge to the Old Mutual Wealth IT strategic architecture.

  • To provide technology leadership and be accountable for the development, maintenance, communication and implementation of the technology strategy, architecture and roadmaps of one, or more:
    • major business segments
    • significant global technology domains
  • To provide technology leadership to programme / project teams and be accountable for the high level architecture of one, or more:
    • major business or IT programmes.
  • To be the trusted source of strategic technology expertise and pro-actively provide technology leadership and guidance to business divisions in their strategic planning and project development lifecycle, including highlighting innovative use of new and existing technologies which may benefit them.
  • To be the trusted source of strategic technology expertise and pro-actively provide technology leadership and direction to project teams and 3rd party partners in the definition of appropriate project solutions to ensure convergence with the strategic architecture and policy.
  • To implement and operate the local technology governance framework in order to assess all projects and initiatives for 'fit' against the Old Mutual Wealth IT technology strategy, architecture and policies, working to resolve non-conformance with the project.
  • To maintain technology expertise through research of innovative technologies, investigation of new supplier offerings and on-going management of strategic suppliers and their product roadmaps.
  • To liaise and interface with business, business architects and business analysts to ensure that the technology strategy and architecture supports future business strategy and requirements across all Old Mutual Wealth business divisions.
  • To lead and/or contribute to the shaping and development of feasibility studies, concepts and business cases.
  • To undertake technology supplier and product selections in conjunction with the business and other areas of the Old Mutual Wealth organisation.
  • To prepare and deliver briefings and presentations for the Old Mutual Wealth IT Executive, and other business and IT executive management teams.
  • Provide expert advice, and where appropriate, contribute to the shaping of commercial / contractual arrangements.
  • To support other team members within Old Mutual Wealth IT Architecture, including technical management, coaching, work allocation, planning and mentoring of staff.
  • To project manage the processes required to support the architecture function.
  • To ensure understanding and adherence to all relevant company and regulatory policies including completion of any mandatory training requirements.
Scope of the role
  • Full technology strategy and architectural ownership, consultancy and oversight of all IT solutions across Old Mutual Wealth IT for Application, Infrastructure, Data or Security.
  • Liaison with regional business partners, outsource partners and external 3rd parties as required

Technical Competencies
  • TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE - significant breadth of technical and strategic understanding either the application, infrastructure, data or security field. With in depth knowledge of at least two specific domains (e.g. Applications: BPM, E-Commerce, CRM, etc; Infrastructure: Voice & Data Networking, Security, Midrange, etc; Data: Corporate Data Modelling, ERDs & Placement, Logical Modelling; Security: Application Security, Data Security and Communications Security including Access Control, Cryptography, Legal, Standards & Policy Implementation, Business Continuity, etc).

Qualifications required:
Educated to degree standard or equivalent.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience:
Experience and Background:
  • Extensive understanding across the breath of IT.
  • Evidenced practice of the development and maintenance of IT architecture and IT strategy, with applied understanding, at an enterprise level of application, infrastructure, data or security architecture.
Technical Knowledge and Skills:
  • Proven track record within a wide variety of IT functions, including systems analysis, development and project management.
  • Proven track record of defining Enterprise architectures for large and small developments.
  • Understanding of industry best practice and trends together with their application within a business context.
  • Knowledge of a wide variety of technologies including several of the disciplines in strategic IT architecture covering either application, infrastructure, data or security architecture with evidenced practice of at least two domains.
Other Knowledge and Skills:
  • Broad knowledge of the financial services industry and key regulatory requirements together with an understanding of business processes.
  • Knowledge and understanding of business strategy and planning, financial analysis, marketing and operational processes.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, demonstrating a variety of influencing styles to enable effective completion of tasks both individually and within groups. Builds sustainable relationships with colleagues and key individuals in the business and IT team from executive management through to technical levels.
  • Ability to take complex, multi-faceted ideas, objectives or problems and work with them through to simple solutions recognising synergies and options.
  • Shows a desire to take the initiative, moving issues forward with clarity. Demonstrates an ability to think 'outside the box' while defining solutions in a workable form.
