Jacobs is currently recruiting for a Principal EC&I Engineer to join our New Nuclear & Generation Service Business. The candidate will be based in our Knutsford Office with the opportunity to travel to client sites, as required. Consideration would be given to being based out of our Gloucester office or our Newcastle office subject to skill area.

The post is for those with demonstrable experience in delivering solutions to the civil nuclear or other highly regulated industries. Candidates will be familiar with the requirements of working in a regulated environment and leading in the delivery of EC&I engineering activities. Knowledge of programmable electronic components, equipment qualification (hardware & software), nuclear safety case and obsolescence management is a distinct advantage.

The candidate must be highly motivated with the ability to work autonomously and provide technical oversight of others to drive projects forward to quality, schedule and budget. They will be confident and comfortable when facing customers and developing relationships, with the ability to produce business offers and tenders that meet customer requirements. The ability to mentor and develop junior engineers with a willingness to passing on knowledge and experience is highly regarded.

Responsibilities will include:
  • Acting as a subject matter expert within the EC&I Team, providing guidance to customers and colleagues
  • Leading in the execution of high-quality engineering tasks to time, quality, budget and customer satisfaction
  • Maintain oversight of multiple projects where tasks are delivered by Jacobs colleagues or 3 rd party suppliers
  • Supporting the design, configuration, implementation and testing of software-based control & protection systems
  • Qualifying equipment in line with the client's requirements (both software & hardware)
  • Input into the safety justifications of new or replacement control systems/components
  • Use of fault analysis and reliability assessments using recognised techniques such as FMEA, FTA, HAZID and HAZOP
  • Engaging with clients to understand and develop technical requirements
  • Mentor and support junior engineers in their development
  • Develop and maintain excellent client relationships
Essential Skills and Experience:
  • Degree in relevant engineering discipline (e.g. Electronic / Electrical Engineering);
  • Ability to work in UK and eligible to gain BPSS and CTC vetting (minimum security clearance)
  • Experience in the nuclear industry or other highly regulated industry (e.g. Rail);
  • An ability to understand and interpret engineering drawings and requirement specifications
  • Awareness of software-based control systems (e.g. PLCs, FPGAs, SMART Components)
  • Strong communication skills
  • Knowledge of electrical systems, control systems and process instrumentation
  • Experience with relevant guidelines, standards and practices (e.g. IEC 61508, 61511, 61513)
  • Proven experience of leading technical teams in the successful delivery of EC&I engineering activities

Desirable Skills and Experience:
  • Experience with the complete C&I hardware and software development life-cycle, including management and modification processes
  • Experience in the production and review of Verification and Validation Test Specifications
  • Experience in functional safety determination, both probabilistic and deterministic
  • Experience with the production and modification of safety cases based on modifications to plant
  • Knowledge and experience of creating requirement definitions, preferably using formal definition tools
  • Experience in the production, modification and review of User Requirement Specifications
  • An appreciation for cyber security requirements and identifying associated risks
