Operations & Change Manager - UW Risk & Reinsurance

Reporting to: Group Head Underwriting Risk & Reinsurance

Location: York

12 month Fixed Term Contract (mat leave cover)

40 - 50k base salary


The role

Are you driven, resilient and willing to roll the sleeves up and pitch in, even when it's something that isn't purely in your job description? Are you comfortable with a lot of things going on at one time and operate best with minimal management? If yes, you should read on.

My team (Underwriting Risk and Reinsurance) measure, price and hedge the biggest underwriting risks we take at Hiscox. We face many challenges and the successful person will be on point for keeping pace with the changes required, BAU activities and efficient engagement with regulators and other teams around the group.

We have an interesting mix of specific projects to work on and process management, engaging with a range of teams around the organisation such as Cat Team Managers, Reinsurance Team, Risk Team , Capital Team and Compliance.

As a manager I can be quite demanding, but I also like to trust and leave people alone to do what they do best. If you like to be micro managed and told what to do, this won't be for you.



What you'll be doing is a mix of Operations and Project Management:


  • Ensure that the Team runs smoothly

  • Effective prioritisation of tasks and early warnings for times when we are unlikely to hit deadlines

  • Projects that change the way we work are delivered

  • Resource clashes and missed deadlines are avoided

  • Drive oversight and management of team processes and deliverables including leadership in operational best practice.

  • Be the point person with other teams demanding our time to ensure deadlines are met

  • Regulatory and governance interactions - keeping on top of deadlines, deliverables and responsibilities - internal and external.

  • Help turning our vision/ambition into concrete plans.

  • Lead change projects

  • Meeting Management - ensuring papers are timely and appropriately constructed with minutes and actions distributed and followed up.

    Person Specification:
    Our must-haves:

    • Excellent Project Management and Operations Management experience ideally within Insurance, Underwriting, Reinsurance, financial services or management consulting.
    • Good process management and Process re-engineering/design skills
    • Self starter -can work on own or in a team.
    • Good written/report writing skills
    • Strong personality, willingness to challenge
    • Empathetic and flexible
