Job Description:
Within Hiscox our Lead Architect role is responsible for defining, communicating and maintaining architectural vision for the Group and Enterprise functions. The Lead Architect leads a team of 5 architects who partner closely with key stakeholders to ensure technology solutions deliver the required business outcomes. The Lead Architect will balance their time between leading their team, as well as hands on architecture activities. The Group and Enterprise Architecture team focuses on a mix of large transformation programmes and a portfolio of change projects.

The Lead Architect will work with the Technology Director, Business Stakeholders, Portfolio Manager and Business Application Managers to ensure that the architectural landscape for is mapped and governed according to the Hiscox Enterprise Architecture Principles. You will take responsibility for ensuring business goals and the drivers are well understood by IT and are mapped to the IT Strategy and architecture roadmap.

The role is key to IT being integrated with the business during key decision-making conversations and furthermore will ensure IT is enabled within the business as we drive forwards our new technology and service offerings to our customers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • The Lead Architect at Hiscox has the responsibility for being the pro-active architecture lead for a business unit. This means regular engagement with the Technology Director as well as actively building business architecture strategies for integration, data and applications. The Lead Architect will have to do this by working with other roles that are responsible for parts of the roadmap depending on the configuration of the business unit.
  • An essential part of the Lead Architect role will be assisting the Technology Director and Business Application Managers in their engagement with their stakeholders. To this end a Lead Architect will be required to be comfortable engaging and presenting to Senior Executive stakeholders from various parts of the business. The ability to take complex technical or architectural concepts and distil the key messages to be delivered to the audience is essential.
  • The Lead Architect as well as Solution Architects is responsible for the delivery of architectural change. The Lead Architect will be responsible for reviewing and approving solution designs based on their alignment with the business unit architecture roadmap. Lead Architects also assist Solution Architects with Solution Designs and where required get involved with the technical delivery.
  • It is the responsibility of the Lead Architect to bring an innovative perspective on business challenges and to try and use their understanding of technology to positively disrupt the business where possible.
  • On a day to day basis the Lead Architect should be engaged in pro-active architectural activity, however this role is also responsible for ensuring the architectural portfolio of change is delivered to the highest standards. Therefore, having an understanding of software delivery lifecycles and a technical grounding is beneficial. The Lead Architect should be able to understand software, integration, data and deployment patterns and practices to a level where quality assurance and issue triage can be conducted

As a leading edge technology driven organisation we would expect you to be able to deliver. Some attributes that you will be required to deliver within the role will be:

  • Architectural blueprints, defining and maintaining architectural principles and the decision making governance
  • Taking responsibility for application and data level enterprise architecture across Group and aligning with the rest of the Hiscox Business Units as necessary.
  • Responsible for architectural elements provided by others, including infrastructure and security
  • Application of standards to business decisions and operations
  • Lead the technology selection processes (e.g. identification of solution options, chosen candidate architectures, etc)
  • Lead and manage a team of solution architects, data architects and security architect.
  • Build the architectural best practices within the team, influencing them within the wider Group
  • Implement good architectural governance and decision making in Group
  • Ensuring architectures are in line with Hiscox Architecture principles and proactively engaging with the Architecture Review Board
  • Constructively contribute to the evolution of Hiscox Architecture Practice framework/operating model

Key Skills/Experience:

  • Proven experience of defining, implementing and maintaining architectural decision processes
  • Strong people leadership and coordination ability - plus the ability to gain credibility quickly within a business
  • Experience of guiding multi discipline architecture professionals
  • Technically astute in the area of applications, integration services, data and security
  • Experience of Cloud Platforms preferably Azure
  • Experience of the Microsoft technology stack

You will be a change agent and will be able to ensure that the right behaviours, technology and tooling is utilised for the right projects. You will be a proactive individual with a string sense of ownership.

You will have experience working within a regulated environment and multiple stakeholders (inclusive of internal and 3 rd party, physically and virtually based)
