Job description


We have an exciting opportunity to join the Large Business directorate within HMRC. The International Tax Specialist role involves working on high-profile risk assessment and enquiry work on some of the UK's biggest multinational companies as well as contributing to upstream solutions and policy.

We are responsible for over 2,000 of the largest businesses that pay a significant proportion of the total business taxes and duties that HMRC collects. Depending on skills, experience and suitability you may be offered International Tax Specialists roles within other directorates (such as Business, Assets and International, and Wealth Mid-Size Compliance).
You will play a meaningful part in our efforts to close the tax gap. You'll take the lead on some of the most complex and ground breaking cases, and bring them to resolution.

Job Description

  • This work attracts a high level of scrutiny from the public and central government bodies, so you'll need experience of dealing with challenging partners and responding constructively.

  • We apply a multidisciplinary approach to our enquiry work, giving you the opportunity to work alongside economists, accountants, solicitors and tax professionals. You'll also enjoy the scope to work across a range of different sectors and industries.

  • You will be leading enquiry work, providing specialist advice/support, developing national projects to promote tax compliance, identify and prevent errors.

  • You will have experience of international regimes such as Transfer Pricing and Diverted Profits Tax, or international tax structuring involving cross border transactions (including finance) and structures.

  • You should be confident enough to lead and work collaboratively to drive risk working and settle enquiry cases.

    Qualifications

    You should hold one of the following qualifications:

  • Chartered Institute of Tax (CTA) or Management Accountants (CIMA)
  • Advanced Diploma in International Tax (ADIT);
  • HMRC's TSP or predecessor qualification (TPDP, ITS2, CPT, FT2);
  • Consultative Committee of Accountancy Bodies membership qualification (such as ICAEW, ICAS, CAI, ACCA, CIPFA) or overseas equivalent;
  • Postgraduate legal qualification.

    Essential Criteria

  • Experience of working with large businesses on their International Tax affairs.

    Desirable Criteria

  • Recent in-depth involvement in international group's corporation tax compliance and planning.

  • Involvement in compliance work with HMRC on international issues.

    Please note that your personal statement should outline how you meet the essential and desirable criteria for the role.

    Applications will be sifted on the personal statement, CV and technical skill in relation to International Tax.

    If you are successful at the sift stage, you will be invited to an interview. The interview will focus on asking questions which assess:-

  • Your behaviours, in particular 'Communicating & Influencing' and 'Leadership'.
  • Your strengths.
  • Your experience and Technical knowledge in International Tax work.

    Interview candidates may be required to undertake an assessment including a case study and presentation. Full details will be provided in the invitation to interview.

    Feedback will only be provided if you attend an interview or assessment.
