Job description

Team Overview This is an exciting time to join Ofcom. We're delivering vital work to help shape the communications services of today and tomorrow - from helping the UK be a world leader in 5G mobile, to driving investment in ultrafast broadband and maintaining content standards in the digital age.

Ofcom's duties and responsibilities are heavily influenced by European and international policy and legislative developments, as well as technological and commercial developments in the sectors we regulate, all of which determine and inform what we do and how we do it. In addition, our ability to secure outcomes for consumers increasingly requires that we co-ordinate with other countries and influence different actors internationally. Ofcom therefore dedicates significant resources to international engagement. For more information about the International Team's activities please see: http://stakeholders.ofcom.org.uk/international/

Purpose of the Role This post goes to the heart of what the International team does within, and for, Ofcom. You will be responsible for supporting and delivering work in two separate yet interrelated areas, our International engagement programme and our International visits programme. You will be responsible for monitoring European and International policy developments and helping to develop and implement an engagement action plan accordingly. In addition, you will have the opportunity to support Ofcom's participation in international networks of regulators.

Requirements of the Role
  • International engagement programme - support and deliver on a programme of international engagement. As part of this you will identify policy issues, countries and stakeholders to prioritise European and international engagement opportunities for senior management. You will be responsible for project managing Chief Executive and Group Director bilateral international visits, including planning, organisation and briefing, as well as travelling in support as necessary.
  • International visits - you will act as the primary point of contact for all incoming international visits to Ofcom, coordinating meeting requests as well as questions from overseas stakeholders. You will be collaboratively evaluating the strategic merit of each request and prioritising accordingly. You will need to liaise with colleagues internally, and host visits from international dignitaries as appropriate. You will also lead the preparation of briefings for senior management to support the visits.
  • Project management - You will take responsibility for Ofcom's participation in a network of international regulators. Liaising with colleagues internally, you will help draft the network's annual work plan and take responsibility for the timely delivery of its workstreams. You will undertake research and drafting tasks, coordinating the input of the other members of the network. You will chair meetings of the network and make proposals to improve its working processes. You will be responsible for briefing and supporting senior colleagues as they participate in the network's activities.
  • European & International policy monitoring and engagement - you will closely monitor European and International policy developments in the sectors that we regulate, including the European Digital Strategy. You will prepare and disseminate information on these developments to the relevant Ofcom teams in a timely manner. In close cooperation with colleagues, you will help develop a European and International engagement action plan reflecting Ofcom's strategic priorities.
This role will involve occasional overseas travel.

Skills, knowledge and experience We are looking for a pro-active and enthusiastic individual with a can-do attitude who will thrive working as part of a diverse team and in a fast-paced environment. In particular, you will need to have:

  • The ability to understand the strategic implications of European and international policy developments in the sectors that we regulate, and to identify the relevant engagement opportunities for Ofcom
  • Demonstrated experience in handling a variety of stakeholders in multi-cultural environments
  • Strong networking and interpersonal skills, with a sense of diplomacy (firm but approachable), cultural awareness and flexibility
