About our Trust
University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust is a newly formed organisation following a merger between Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (WSHFT) and Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals Trust (BSUH) on 1st April 2021. WSHFT and BSUH have been working in partnership with a shared leadership team for four years leading up to the recent merger. Our vision (Excellent care, every time - "Where better never stops") is at the heart of all that that we do - we pride ourselves in putting the compassionate care of patients first and foremost. WSHFT became the first non-specialist acute hospital trust to be awarded Outstanding in all of the CQC's key inspection areas and BSUH became the fastest improving acute hospital trust in England and was rated Good overall and Outstanding for caring by the CQC. Moving forward together, the ambition is to continue improving and providing excellent care, every time, for patients.
The merger was a technical but important process for both WSHFT and BSUH which will ensure that the right leadership, structures, and governance are in place. Our journey has started but we have much still to learn as we work towards full merger, enabled by our Patient First ethos which shapes our values and gives structure to our improvement and performance management. Our shared sense of purpose, commitment to investing in and developing our workforce and focus on continuous improvement in the pursuit of excellent care, every time, for our patients underpins all that we do. The largest part of this journey is investing in staff and creating a vibrant and supportive organisation where successful careers flourish. About this vacancy
Our quest is to completely eradicate preventable medication errors and provide a world beating pharmacy service for our patients and organisation. Our Foundation pharmacists are key to the success of this journey and we aim to recruit the best, provide the best training and keep the best (that's you by the way). You will work alongside the rest of our team, delivering a service where 'average is just not good enough'.
We offer a multitude of varied rotations, each of four month duration, such as respiratory & acute medicine, frailty, digestive diseases, major trauma & orthopaedics, patient services and a unique rotation supporting Brighton University undergraduate placements as an educator and practice supervisor. We hope to have rotations available with our partners in Mental Health and Primary Care in the near future.
For each rotation you will be assigned a practice supervisor and your development will be supported using our internal appraisal system and the Royal Pharmaceutical Society Foundation Pharmacist Framework with your designated educational supervisor. Your feedback is important too and will be actively sought as part of monthly communication cascades' with our experienced Educational Programme Director for Foundation Pharmacists, and during the Local Faculty Group meetings. The Trust provides many inter-professional learning opportunities which would also support your development.
We are a major regional university teaching hospital, providing general acute services and tertiary services for patients across Sussex and the south east of England. We work as one team across two sites; Brighton and Haywards Heath and have the infrastructure and support for band 6 pharmacist's development with experience of supporting band 6 to 7 progression posts.
The Trust is big and busy and is a specialist in vascular, cardiac, renal, major trauma, cancer, neurosciences, stroke, ophthalmology, infectious diseases and HIV. Our Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital at the Brighton site hosts many specialist paediatric services.
The Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton is undergoing an extensive £485 million redevelopment and a £30 million Emergency Department (A&E) expansion. University Hospitals Sussex is committed to the Patient First vision which is our long-term approach to transform hospital services for the better directly supported by the Trust's values and behaviours ~ kindness and understanding, fairness and transparency, working together and excellence.
"Everyone passionate about delivering excellent quality every time"
We are fortunate to have close links with the University of Brighton, University of Sussex, Brighton & Sussex Medical School and the University Teaching Hospital, Lusaka, Zambia and have been awarded a grant from the Commonwealth Partnerships to champion pharmacists as antibiotic guardians in Zambia.
We currently have four joint academic clinical lecturer appointments, an interface pharmacist with our lead commissioner, an embedded pharmacist with NHSE and three consultant pharmacists working within gastroenterology, cardiology and HIV as areas of expertise.
Our Pharmacy team is led by Mike Cross but all staff get to identify and fix problems through participation in our weekly 'Patient First - Opportunity Boards' and can escalate the bigger issues to managers who in turn have been trained to sort things out.
Our most recent review by Health Education England of our Pharmacy department education infrastructure concluded that 'our trainees felt well supported by the senior staff members and that they were very approachable'.
Rapidly improving in terms of overall quality and financial control, this is a Trust which embarked on a transformation programme in 2016 and is now reaping the benefits as our CQC report demonstrates.
