Job description


Reporting to the Director of Wealthy and Mid-sized Business Compliance (WMBC), this is an operational delivery role with senior leadership responsibility. This role will be accountable for the design and delivery of a comprehensive programme of compliance activity across complex areas of the UK tax systems including: public bodies; charities; employment status (including the implementation of the off-payroll reform for the private sector being introduced in 2020); the taxation of people who come from abroad to work in the UK; large partnerships.

We are looking for an excellent leader with the vision to deliver results for our customers, to lead a diverse programme of compliance activity and to build sustainable compliance across a number of varied customer segments and risk areas. The post holder will also need to work with their team and across HMRC and wider government to identify and implement ways to exploit new technology and customer insight to transform the way we do our work.

As part of the WMBC Senior Leadership team you will play a key role in contributing to the corporate and collective leadership of the directorate. The post holder will directly manage a team of 5 and wider leadership of up to 850. This is a highly visible role with key customer groups and stakeholders and as a result will work in partnership with colleagues in policy teams and those delivering change programmes.

Your responsibilities for the role will be:

  • Leading circa 850 colleagues, primarily in the tax and operational delivery professions, empowering them to deliver clearly set objectives, communicating the strategic direction for their work and the wider role of HM Revenue & Customs with confidence and enthusiasm.

  • Delivering good customer service to a range of specialist customers including public bodies, charities, financial institutions and globally mobile individuals.

  • Leading on the compliance strategy for employment status and intermediaries, working alongside policy colleagues and other stakeholders across the department.

  • Sustaining compliance by promoting compliance, preventing non-compliance and responding actively to those who seek to avoid or evade paying what they should.

  • Providing inspiring leadership to foster collegiate leadership, an inclusive working environment and innovative culture of continuous improvement

  • Promoting learning and development, managing performance effectively and developing talent at all levels.

  • Identifying and implementing new ways of working that design around customers' needs, exploiting new technology and reducing costs, putting the work on a sustainable footing for the future.

  • Representing HMRC with key customer groups and stakeholders.

  • Contributing to the leadership of the Directorate as a member of the WMBC Senior Leadership Team, working flexibly to respond to the demands and uncertainty of a rapidly changing organisation
