Job description

Job Description:
Hiscox are looking for a Delivery Engineer to manage technical change on our group data warehouse platforms and associated BI deliveries. These changes are typically enterprise-wide with change being driven by a number of business unit customers (especially Finance) and delivered via an internal IT team supplemented with third party resources.

The right person will ideally have experience working with teams in Agile & hybrid methodologies to deliver Data Warehouse change. The individual should also be able to demonstrate the ability to drive positive change and quality improvements in working practices by working closely with the team, customers, partners and third parties.

What you'll be doing as a Delivery Engineer:

Heavily involved in a key strategic data platform, this role will provide you with many opportunities to work with key stakeholders and shape the way we use data across the group. Responsibilities include:

  • Primary point of contact for delivery by the Group Data Engineering team
  • Day-to-day management of the technology change cycle (dev, test, deploy, fix etc.)
  • Overall accountability for the quality of deliverables produced by the delivery team
  • Detailed delivery planning in conjunction with change channels (including support) and team
  • Capacity management of the team
  • Maintenance of requirements backlog and JIRA processes
  • Facilitation of planning and retrospective sessions across change channels and delivery team
  • Removing technical blockers to ensure delivery team is as efficient as possible
  • Identification, prioritisation and delivery of tangible process improvements (continuous improvement)
  • Build relationships with key stakeholders and actively manage expectations
  • Proactive management of internal and external assumptions, dependencies and risks with associated reporting to business & IT stakeholders
  • Adhere to Hiscox change governance and delivery standards
  • Co-ordination of Support & Incident Management

Our must-haves:

  • Good stakeholder management, skilled at balancing conflicting requirements across multiple high profile programmes of work & BAU with rapidly evolving targets
  • Experience of managing technical delivery teams, ideally within Data or BI
  • Experience of using tools to manage the application delivery lifecycle (e.g. JIRA)
    • Is self-motivated, confident and decisive, with a 'can do' attitude to work; a proactive manager who actively seeks out and deals with issues rather than waiting for direction
    • Is able to communicate clearly to all colleagues, including senior IT management and offshore technical resources
    • Has experience of working on large complex business projects & integration solutions
    • Has experience of the full project life cycle, from initial analysis and solution design to user acceptance testing and production support

Our nice to haves:

  • Knowledge of Data Warehouse principles and their application
  • Understanding of testing techniques applied to solution delivery
  • Experience of working with remote delivery teams / team members
  • Experience with dealing with Vendors and 3 rd Parties
  • An appreciation of build processes and practices and DevOps principles
  • Has experience of implementing and managing processes and governing them within technical teams; comfortable rolling out new practices to established teams
  • Understands and demonstrates the Agile principles and how to apply best practices in the software development environment
  • Is able to influence, coach and support colleagues in adopting new processes and ways of working
  • A basic understanding of Finance processes
