Computational Biologist

The GSK Computational Biology team in Functional Genomics is seeking a self-motivated Computational Biologist to join our dynamic and multidisciplinary team in Stevenage, UK.

As a Computational Biologist, you will be working in a dynamic and highly collaborative environment and you will be encouraged to develop your computational biology skills as well as your internal and external scientific profile through presentations and peer-reviewed publications.

This role will provide YOU the opportunity to lead key activities to progress YOUR career. These responsibilities include some of the following:

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with our genomics and gene editing experimental teams to develop the department's capability in state-of-the-art functional genomics techniques such as single cell RNA-Seq, genome-wide CRISPR knockout screens and CROPSeq.
  • Support drug discovery and development across the R&D organisation through integrative analysis of all forms of functional genomics data.
  • Help develop new computational and statistical methods to understand the underlying biological mechanisms driving disease.
  • Contribute to multiple phases of the drug discovery pipeline, driving the development of new medicines for important diseases of unmet medical need.

Basic Qualifications:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • MSc in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Genomics or a related field; or BSc and experience in the fields above.
  • Experience using the Linux command line and implementation of genomic data processing pipelines in Bash, Perl, Python, R or similar programming languages.
  • Experience working with high performance compute cluster environments and/or cloud computing environments (such as AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure).
  • Knowledge of fundamental concepts in biology and statistics.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work effectively in teams.

Preferred Qualifications:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:

  • Experience working with experimental teams in genomic science.
  • Experience processing data from large scale functional genomic platforms, such as transcriptomics, proteomics, or metabolomics.
  • Experience using R, Python or similar programming languages for complex data analysis.
  • Knowledge of the use of functional genomics methods, such as CRISPR gene editing, in phenotypic screens.
  • Knowledge of and experience with single cell genomic profiling methods, such as single cell RNA-Seq.
