Base Location: Glasgow, Perth, Dublin or Belfast

Salary: £38,600 - £58,000

Working Pattern: 1 Year Fixed Term Contract starting January 2021 | Full Time | Flexible working patterns available

About the Department

SSE Renewables is a leading developer and operator of renewable energy across the UK and Ireland. With a portfolio of around 4GW of onshore wind, offshore wind and hydro, our strategy is to drive the transition to a net zero world through the world class development, construction and operation of renewable energy assets.. In order to contribute to a low carbon future, we have committed to treble our current Renewables output by 2030.

Our Engineering & Innovation team is focussed on creating an engineering Centre of Excellence and drive our innovation agenda. We take responsibility for the resourcing and delivery of all engineering requirements across the capital portfolio, as well as overseeing our Renewables R&D activities with a focus on the future.

What is the Role?

We are currently seeking an Asset Engineer within the Civil Engineering Team with knowledge and experience in asset management of large-scale civil assets, particularly those associated with Hydro generation to join the Renewable Engineering Centre. This role will support the SSE Renewables businesses through the assessment of existing Hydro generating assets including Dams, Reservoirs Tunnels and Penstocks (pipelines).

The candidate will also have the opportunity to get involved in a number of Hydro projects looking at new Hydro generating facilities, the re-planting/major overhaul of existing Hydro Power Stations as well as opportunities to bring efficiencies to existing Hydro generating Stations.

What do I need?

To be successful in this role, you should be a Chartered Engineer or have a very clear path to becoming chartered. You should have demonstrable technical knowledge and experience within Hydro Generation and ideally have some experience in Dams, Reservoirs, Tunnels or Penstocks. Experience in hydraulics or geotechnics is preferable but not essential.

You should be comfortable making engineering-based decisions with significant impact on engineering risk. You'll have a strong commercial acumen and a firm grasp of the context and implications of engineering activities and decisions.

In particular, we are looking for individuals who have skills in the following;

- Experience in the assessment of aging civil infrastructure.

- Experience in the preparation of technical reports and recommendations.

- Experience in managing 3rd party consultants for specific areas of design.

- Understanding of the interfaces and technical risk between the key design engineering disciplines and the impacts of decisions.

- Experience in managing the verification and validation of design against key design specifications.

- Understanding of efficient operation of assets.

You will display excellent communication and interpersonal skills. You will possess an innovative mind set, have a flexible approach and have the capacity to deliver high quality work on a consistent basis in a demanding environment. Although office/home based you will be required to travel as and when is required by the work being undertaken.

It is an essential requirement for this role that you have a full, current driving licence.
