The handy person/caretaker will undertake a range of caretaking duties including security and supervision of the premises and related equipment, maintenance, DIP/handyperson duties, porterage, cleaning and monitoring standards of contracted cleaner to ensure the premises are in a good condition and can function efficiently.
To act as keyholder to lock and unlock buildings ensuring access by staff, pupils and visitors ensuring the relevant security of the premises including dealing with any unauthorised access issues as appropriate.
Duties may include:
Provide access to the premises in an emergency, including responding to call outs outside normal working hours in the event of break ins or other emergencies
Planning of own routine workload to ensure that the premises are clean and in a good state of repair and function efficiently
Undertake first line repairs and handyperson/maintenance tasks as required, including painting, repairs, putting up shelving
To undertake the full range of cleaning tasks within the premises (and monitor those carried out by the contract cleaner) including toilets, the cleaning of windows and polishing of floors etc.
Ensuring that toilets are replenished with stock and that stocks of cleaning materials etc. are maintained
To check that central heating systems are appropriately set and function effectively, organizing maintenance if required. Take meter readings as required
Monitor the condition of the premises reporting any routine repairs that cannot be undertaken by the postholder and follow up to ensure that work is undertaken
Monitor contractors working on site ensuring that work is undertaken satisfactorily
In liaison with the head of establishment identify and plan for any longer term premises repairs and maintenance needs
Porterage duties including moving and setting out of furniture and taking delivery of stock
Ensure that own equipment is maintained
To keep all hard areas and paths are free from litter and all drains and gullies are free flowing and clean. Clear paths of snow etc in the event of bad weather
Pruning and strimming as and when necessary and reporting additional requirements to grounds maintenance contractor
Undertake any additional duties in connection with the evening or weekend use of the premises as required
Undertake health and safety duties as required by including the weekly testing of fire alarm bells and appropriate recording, ensuring that all other duties are carried out in accordance with health and safety requirements
To participate in the performance and development review process, taking responsibility for identifying learning and development opportunities and reflect on training needs for discussion with the line manager
To ensure that all duties and services provided are in accordance with the council equal opportunities policy and practice
The duties of the post may be changed and/or varied to meet changing circumstances at the discretion of the head of establishment
Able to undertake physical aspects of the job. (post involves lifting/ carrying heavy loads and working in awkward positions)
Able to on occasions/regularly cover evenings and weekends on a rota basis and able to respond to any emergency call outs
You will be required to operate powered equipment including domestic-type laundry equipment and work in a flexible way to meet the requirements of the centre Knowledge, skills and experience
Educated to RQF level 2 (GCSE) or equivalent by experience, which may include specific practical qualifications such as apprenticeships.
Evidence of Health and Safety experience, relevant qualifications and recent training.
Evidence of a First Aid qualification, training and experience.
