Are you a dynamic Big Data engineer working in infrastructure engineering and administration looking to put their engineering experience to good use, whilst working in a transformational environment that will present opportunities to learn new big data skills and technologies?
Do you have experience of working as an administrator or engineer, designing, proving, building and supporting large database, big data and ETL technologies along with the underlying operating system and storage infrastructure?
Do you relish working across multiple projects and immersing yourself in a team that will stretch and test you?
You will come from either an experienced background, having spent several years in a similar role, or from an academic background having studied computer science or like degree level or equivalent.
Most of all you will have a thirst for knowledge of big data technology and have flexibility regarding what you can take on in our fast-changing and fast-growing transformational environment
For us, it's not just about having the right technical background, you need to have an open mind, be able to work collaboratively and be driven to learn and succeed.
Who we're looking for
As a requirement, you will have some experience of the following (or similar technologies):
- Big Data Technologies, such as:
o Hortonworks/Cloudera Platforms, Map Reduce, NoSQL, MongoDB, Kafka, Nifi, Sqoop, SparkSQL, Hive, HBase, Lucene or Cassandra
- Linux OS Administration, such as:
o RHEL, SUSE and CentOS, Shell Scripting or Configuration as Code
- ETL Technologies, such as:
o Informatica, Talend, SAP Data Integrator, Microsoft SSIS
- Relational Database Systems, such as:
o Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, Postgres or MySQL
o Teradata, Netezza or Greenplum
What you'll be doing
As part of our infrastructure engineering database team, you will be responsible for the building and support of our non-production big data platforms. You will play a key role, working with architecture, design, IT partners and IT suppliers, to build high performance and supportable big data platforms, document knowledge and best practice, and then transfer the new platform to the production support teams.
You will invest a lot of time in learning and mastering the latest big data technologies that are selected on Nationwide's roadmap. The role will require collaboration with our other engineering teams, including the application design, build and test teams within the data and analytics community who will deploy on to the big data platforms.
The big data technologies that the data and analytics community wish to leverage are somewhat niche and cutting edge, so this requires at times, a great deal of problem solving and analytical thinking, or just shear pragmatism in a fast-paced agile environment. Data processing performance and environment stability is also critical to the data and analytics community so ensuring systems are designed to perform best whilst being reliable and stable is a design challenge you may face on a daily basis.
