Job description

This role is set within a 24 hour residential setting offers a highly competitive salary, flat rate allowance, payable at 10% or 30% (dependent on hours which will include days and nights). This post is for 30 hours a week.

The Role

The adult social care function supports vulnerable people, their families and networks. This role delivers direct provision of services to people with a learning disability and/or autism and their families and reports to an experienced registered home's manager. This is a great opportunity to make a difference to people's lives and work in a dynamic and person-centred way.

A residential assistant is responsible for facilitating and supporting people with a learning disability and/or Autism to live safe, healthy and meaningful lives as part of their communities from a Care Quality Commission (CQC) registered residential home setting. They work as part of a supportive and diverse team and also develop their skills to work independently alongside people, their families, networks and communities. They will be experienced in supporting adults by working collaboratively with them to establish a positive working relationship, based on their strengths, hopes and dreams so that they will thrive.

The residential assistant will focus on being a committed, flexible and passionate member of the team. They will support adults in accordance with their care plans, ensuring access to social and leisure activities according to their needs and wishes. The role also includes the continuous monitoring of individuals emotional and general wellbeing.

Role Specific Accountabilities:
  • Provides support to individuals to ensure they are able to reach their optimum independence and can exert control in their everyday lives, in accordance with the care plan.
  • Supports individuals/groups to access social and leisure activities which may include college classes, resource centres, community access and other activities.
  • Monitoring individual emotional and general wellbeing on a daily basis and ensure the protection of adults from abuse, reporting any concerns to senior managers.
  • Support individuals to make choices in a way that always respects their dignity and privacy and promotes their choice in accordance with the care plan and any other key documents.
  • Ensure respectful, patient and courteous approaches are undertaken with adults, their families, visitors and colleagues whether within the home or out in the community.
  • Undertakes accurate and legible recording to ensure it meets the Care Quality Commission standards and positively promote adult social care.
  • Specific individual and shared targets and objectives are defined annually within the performance management framework.

We are seeking people who are committed to enabling people with a learning disability and/or autism to live meaningful lives. They will be:

  • Educated to RFQ Level 2 Caring for adults and/or willing to attain this within 24 months and/or equivalent by experience.
  • An understanding of the range of strengths, assets, risks and opportunities for people with a learning disability and/or autism.
  • Experience of continued professional development and knowledge in a relevant professional setting.
  • Experience of working with people in a paid or voluntary capacity; or paid work in residential care.
  • Experience of using relevant technology.
  • Aware of person centred approaches and respect for dignity, privacy and promoting choice
  • Willing to undertake mandatory training.
  • Have an understanding and the ability to develop knowledge about relevant policies, procedures and legislation.
  • Have good communication skills and an ability to develop a rapport and engage with diverse groups of individuals.

As part of employment with Essex County Council (ECC) should your role require a DBS check you will be required to register with the DBS update service. The DBS update service ensures all registered DBS certificates are kept up to date and allows authorised parties to view the status of your certificate.
