The roles are based in the Visa and Citizenship directorate

The Home Office leads on immigration and passports, drugs policy, crime policy and counter-terrorism and works to ensure visible, responsive and accountable policing in the UK. The Home Office is a ministerial department, supported by 27 agencies and public bodies.

UK Visas and Immigration is responsible for making millions of decisions every year about who has the right to visit or stay in the country, with a firm emphasis on national security and a culture of customer satisfaction for people who come here legally.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Use Home Office guidance and policy to consider immigration applications.

  • Make decisions on immigration applications within service standards to quality and time.

  • Record casework outcomes and decision letters on the Home Office immigration database.

    Desirable Criteria:

  • Understanding of operational processes.

  • Awareness of Improvement approaches and how these can be used for operational excellence.

  • Experience of working effectively as a member of a team and building strong working relationships.

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills. Able to convey information clearly and accurately, and in plain English.

    Security

    Successful candidates must meet the security requirements before they can be appointed. The level of security needed is counter-terrorist check .

    Nationality statement

    Candidates will be subject to UK immigration requirements as well as Civil Service nationality rules .

    If you're applying for a role requiring security clearance please be aware that foreign or dual nationality is not an automatic bar. However certain posts may have restrictions which could affect those who do not have sole British nationality or who have personal connections with certain countries outside the UK.

    As part of the recruitment process UKVI will be conducting an Assessment Centre which you may be invited to attend should you pass the initial online Civil Service test.

    After submission of your application you will be invited to complete an online test (Situational Judgement test). You must be successful at this stage to progress to the Assessment Centre.

    Please complete the online test as soon as possible (within 24-48 hours is recommended), the closing date for the test is Midnight on 24th January 2019.

    Please note that the test cannot be taken on mobile phones or tablets. The test is administered online and accessed via the CS Jobs website.

    Some applicants may have difficulty using the tests, for different reasons. Whilst the tests should work on most operating systems and modern browsers with a good internet connection, we cannot guarantee that every combination will work. At the beginning, the test will check what browser you are using, and alert you if it is likely to be incompatible.

    You will be sent an invitation and provided full instructions on how to complete the test.

    We will assess you against three competencies at the Assessment Centre:-

    Making effective decisions - Case Study
    Managing a quality service - Case Study
    Collaborating and partnering - Interview

    If you pass the case study on the day, you will then be asked to attend a blended interview.

    Interviews will be based on the competency - 'Collaborating and partnering'.

    You will also be asked strength based questions.

    Each assessment is specific to the role of Administrative Officer - Operations, with tasks designed purposely to coincide with the required skills. Remember that you are being assessed against these skills in each and every exercise.

    The format of the day will be as follows:

    1 - Case study:
    The aim of the case study will be to assess your ability to demonstrate the following competencies: 'Making Effective Decisions' and 'Managing a Quality Service'

    2 - Panel interview:
    The aim of the panel interview will be to assess your ability to demonstrate the following competency: 'Collaborating and partnering'

    Please refer to the Civil Service Competency Framework attached for further guidance.

    Preparation:

    You do not need to bring anything with you as all equipment will be provided, nor will you be required to prepare anything in advance. However, we would recommend that you spend some time thinking about the qualities and skills that the panel will be looking for in line with the job description.

    It is important to remember that the panel will be looking for evidence of team work, problem solving and initiative in all candidates who attend the assessment centre and will be assessing your individual capability for each of these skills.

    If you have any special requirements that will make the recruitment day easier for you to attend, please contact pmrecruitment@homeoffice.gov.uk as soon as possible in advance of your attendance at the Assessment Centre.

    You will be advised on the day of assessment if you are successful or unsuccessful, no other feedback will be provided.

    The Assessment Centre will be held around late February / early March 2019 and located within Liverpool City Centre. Exact location details will be provided nearer the time. The Assessment Centre is expected to last between 1-3 hours therefore, it may be necessary that you are available for the full day. Please bring Refreshments to have throughout the day.

    Feedback will only be provided if you attend an interview or assessment.
