Reporting to: Head of Strategy & Innovation

Key Responsibilities

A challenging role in a small strategy team within a rapidly expanding business, reporting directly to the strategy director and in close contact with the CEO, CFO and other business leaders. The Strategic Development Manager will play a key role in formulating and articulating strategy, identifying and prioritising growth opportunities, providing insights that drive competitive advantage, evaluating and driving market entry strategies and supporting corporate development projects. Broad knowledge of life and retirement markets in the UK and potentially elsewhere, strong analytical and communications skills, a fast learner and with the credibility to build trusted relationships with senior managers across the business.
  • Monitor and report on competitors " financial results, partnerships, proposition developments, people, technology " and use this fact base to derive insights into strategy and opportunities/threats for AIG Life
  • Conduct analysis of alternative markets and sectors, working with external advisers as appropriate, and support the Head of Strategy and Innovation in developing market entry and growth strategies

  • Assist in identifying possible acquisition targets and carrying out or supporting strategy and market due diligence
  • Provide the Propositions team (and others) with data-driven market insights to shape new propositions and develop business cases that optimise prioritisation of the portfolio of change projects

Principal Skills
  • Must have:
    • Commercial mindset and experience of strategic thinking and analysis

    • Experience of the individual and/or group protection market
    • Basic understanding of long-term savings and protection financial reporting
    • Ability to build relationships of trust and work with people across AIG Life, drawing out commercial insights and implications where there is a high degree of uncertainty
    • Ability to cover more than one stream of work in parallel, to tight deadlines with minimal supervision
    • Passion for the potential of the life and pensions industry to add value to peoples lives


  • An advantage to have:
    • Experience of other sectors within life and retirement
    • Experience of life and/or retirement markets in other territories outside the US and UK
    • Experience of strategic frameworks
    • Good experience of facilitating workshops
    • Experience of mergers and acquisitions and/or post-merger integration


Technical Skills and Expertise
  • Understanding of UK retail financial services
  • Strong research and analytical skills, synthesising data and deriving and articulating value-adding insight
  • Strong Excel and PowerPoint skills and ability to construct robust and transparent spreadsheet models
  • Business case development experience
  • Demonstrable ability to grasp relatively complex economic relationships
