Working Through Cancer Network at DBS

Working Through Cancer Network

Set up in September 2018, the Working through Cancer network (WTC) is a Home Office wide network for staff – managed by staff. It provides much needed support, empathy and practical advice for colleagues diagnosed with cancer, people who are carers and for line managers.

For many people, receiving a cancer diagnosis can feel devasting and overwhelming. The WTC network provides immediate support and reassurance about work issues and wider questions, so staff can concentrate on treatment plans and remaining well.

WTC has three elements to their general offer:

  • Buddy groups – For individuals, carers and line managers - there is always someone at the end of the phone.
  • Line Manager Confidence Building Session – A 90-minute session co-designed with Macmillan, delivered to teams across the UK.
  • A dedicated one-stop-shop on the Home Office intranet - Regular updates and information for anyone who is a member of the network.

Since the network’s launch in September 2018 there has been some brilliant feedback from colleagues who have made use of the offer.

“It is rewarding to be able to give something back - and to be part of this amazing and innovative support network”  - Network Member

“I just wanted to say thank you – you made a huge impact at the IE conference. I think you opened people’s eyes to the issues and I am hopeful that some potential new members of the network will be in touch.”  - Network User

“Most people have, in some way, been affected by cancer whether through personal experience or through family and friends. Seonaid’s talk very clearly resonated, indeed moved emotionally (me included) many people in the room. Her presentation was one of the most amazing and moving things I’ve seen.” - Senior Manager

Home Office staff can get in touch with the network if they feel the need to talk to someone who “gets it”, but also to help bring the network to life in their local office; WTC network members are always happy to come and speak at wellbeing events and away days, including expanding across Whitehall.
