Wellbeing at Siemens

At Siemens the wellbeing of our employees is critically important so we provide a range of advice, resources and support designed to promote wellbeing, be it physical health, mental health or having a healthy work environment especially given the new age of home working.

Physical Health

Often when we are working it is easy to forget to remember to take care of your body. All employees at Siemens are encouraged to periodically spend time away from laptops to stretch their legs and rest their eyes. However, when working from home all employees are required to undertake a Display Screen Equipment assessment to make sure your posture is correct and eyes are not strained in order to have a healthy working environment.

If employees do have any musculoskeletal injuries there is support available, all employees have access to the Bupa PhysioLine (a free physiotherapy advice line) and can be referred for an Occupational Health Assessment for further support.

Mental Health

We recognise how important mental health is and how much of an impact stress, anxiety and depression can have. In order to support employees we have developed partnerships with Mind and the Unmind App which help to provide support for employees with their mental health through providing a variety of resources.

Employees also have access to the Employee Assistance Programme in partnership with Health Assured who run a 24/7 helpline and offer services Personal Support, Guidance and Counselling, Financial and Legal Information and Dependent Care Information.

We also have a network of Mental Health First Aiders based across multiple sites who are trained on how to support their colleagues with their mental health.

Flexible Working

As the world of work changes at an accelerating pace, we recognise that you may have increasing possibilities to work in different ways. This isn't the case for all of our roles but, for many, the idea of flexible working means that you can work in ways which better meet your personal situation.  Clearly, all of our roles are there to create value for Siemens and our customers, however the way in which we achieve that is changing.

Through that change, Siemens is creating a new way of working, in a culture which is based on the central themes of flexibility, empowerment and trust.  Through dialogue with you about your preferences and the business needs, we are creating new ways of working that are less driven by the location of a Siemens building or fixed hours of working, but more by a focus on delivering outcomes and an openness to exploring flexible approaches which meet everyones needs.

Covid and Lockdowns

During the various lockdowns, we were strongly focussed on the wellbeing of all of our colleagues.  With many of our colleagues working in production and service environments we worked hard to create a covid safe environment.  These colleagues kept Siemens delivering for our customers and we kept them safe.

With many of our other colleagues working remotely in lockdown we worked hard to look after their wellbeing.  We worked with 7 Futures and other organisations to run information and coaching sessions such as “Parents – how are you really?” and “Balancing work and home schooling” which with different sessions targeted at different age children.

We also launched the #InThisTogether Programme to support our colleagues on the new challenges we all faced. We developed a series of core topics such as; managing virtual meetings, managing time pressures on your day, building resilience and looking after yourself. Each session covered practical tools and techniques but more importantly they were designed to create conversation that enabled our colleagues to share their own best practice and create a network of peer support.

In June 2020 we ran a virtual FeelGood Festival, which was repeated at WinterFest later in the year.  These are week long events with virtual wellbeing sessions focussing on how to balance flexible working, caring requirements with meditation and yoga sessions along with fun events such as drawing classes, music jamming and quizzes held in the evenings.  Many of these sessions continue to be held monthly whilst we move to a hybrid working environment.

Through the creativity of our teams, we have seen many ideas come to fruition.  These include virtual coffee roulettes, team check-ins and the creation of a virtual Brew Room, with separate Teams channels for book lovers, gamers, music lovers and more to replicate the feeling of a water-cooler catchup.  At Siemens, our teams recognise the value in staying connected and looking out for one another.
