Unconscious Bias Training at dunnhumby

Unconscious bias is an automatic mental shortcut that helps us wade through the millions of bits of information coming at us at any given time. In many situations this isn’t an issue and, more often than not, we make the right choice based on what we’ve learned from our background and past experience. However, commonly this is against certain characteristics, which can be deemed discriminatory, and the impact of bias is greater when we’re short on time and feeling stressed.

At work, unconscious bias can impact your management style, the culture and working environment you create for your team, as well as the promotion, recruitment and mentoring decisions you make if action isn’t taken to recognise the signs and attempt to eliminate it from decisions concerning employees.

The aim of this training is to help you better understand how unconscious bias can affect your behaviour and why, as leaders, it’s important we address unconscious biases in our people processes (e.g. recruitment and performance review) and, most importantly, in our day to day dealings with teams and colleagues.
