Social Innovation at York St John University

In terms of social impact, there are so many ways in which York St John University works to make a social contribution to its immediate stakeholders and the wider community.

Some of the initiatives have a direct impact on the curriculum  and engages the students as co-learners, buddies and/or mentors  and provides them with opportunities to engage with the issues that many of them face whether it be mental illness, bullying or  issues of health and body image, foster caring, autism and learning difficulties or domestic abuse and domestic violence.

It engages with disadvantaged groups such as travellers, refugees, ex-offenders, army veterans and those affected by war and conflict and encourages young people from non-traditional backgrounds to consider higher education through visits, residential summer schools, a ‘Right to Read’ volunteer programme and even ‘speed dating with industry’ organised with North Yorkshire Business and Enterprise Partnerships (NYBEP). There are initiatives that challenge prejudice. There are plenty of examples of working and contributing internationally. In terms of reaching out to the community, there are several lecture programmes which offer the public opportunities to come into contact with major speakers from the political, academic, business and sporting world.

Social Enterprise Mark

The Social Enterprise Mark is the only internationally available social enterprise accreditation scheme, enabling credible social enterprises to prove that they are making a difference.

The Social Enterprise Mark independently guarantees that a business operates with the central aim of using income and profits to maximise positive social and/or environmental impact, which takes precedence over a requirement to maximise personal profits for owners and shareholders.
