Partnering with the Armed Forces at Atkins

As an engineering consultancy, our people are our greatest asset, enabling us to take on some of the world’s most technically challenging and time critical projects

Amongst our people we have a growing number of Armed Forces Reservists, ordinary people who give up their time to train and serve alongside the Army, Royal Navy, Royal Air Force or Royal Marines. Being an Armed Forces Reservist demands high levels of commitment from our people, and so to recognise and complement this, Atkins first signed the Armed Forces Corporate Covenant in 2014.

The Armed Forces Covenant is a pledge of support for our people who choose to be Reservists, and commits us to sustain and enhance the ways in which that support is demonstrated.

Supporting our Armed Forces staff

In December 2015, at our inaugural annual Reservist Conference, we launched our Partnering with the Armed Forces programme to better support our Armed Forces staff and promote wider Defence engagement. This new programme encompasses a number of project streams including Armed Forces advocacy, improved HR support for Reservists and ex-Service personnel, recruitment of Service leavers, graduate and personal development and the UK Defence enterprise skills agenda.

If you’d like to learn more about our Partnering with the Armed Forces programme, why not visit here.

We also took the opportunity at our Reservist Conference to reinforce our original Armed Forces Covenant pledges with a number of new commitments. These pledges include increasing the number of paid days away from work that Reservist staff receive to meet their annual Reservist training commitments from five to ten days. A copy of our Armed Forces Covenant pledges can be found here.

Being recognised as an Armed Forces friendly organisation

Armed Forces Covenant Reception

In November 2014 we were recognised for our commitment to the Armed Forces community with one of the Ministry of Defence’s first Silver Employer Recognition Scheme Awards. One year later the Ministry of Defence awarded Atkins’ commitment and advocacy with one of its coveted Gold Employer Recognition Scheme awards.

The Defence Employer Recognition Scheme awards were launched in 2014 and include Bronze, Silver and Gold tiers. We received our awards for a number of reasons including the guidelines and policies we have in place for our Reservist staff, our support and promotion of Reservist initiatives and charitable activity, and our signing of the Armed Forces Covenant.

Further information about the Employer Recognition Scheme awards can be found here.

Joe Townsend

As part of our commitment to being an Armed Forces friendly organisation, Atkins has also sponsored Ex-Royal Marine Commando and professional athlete Joe Townsend for the last three years on his journey to the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

Partnering with the Armed Forces

As a global engineering consultancy, Atkins takes on a number of complex and time critical projects. These require a breadth and depth of skill and resilience to provide our clients with the highest standard of service. Our people and our Armed Forces community are highly valued contributors to this success.

In November 2014 we were recognised for our commitment to the Armed Forces community with one of the Ministry of Defence’s first Silver Employer Recognition Scheme Awards. One year later the Ministry of Defence awarded Atkins for its commitment and advocacy, with the coveted Gold Employer Recognition Scheme awards.

Supporting our Armed Forces staff

Not only do veterans and reservists bring with them specialist skills, we often see them take the lead and initiative in problem solving, planning, teamwork, and stakeholder management. We currently have over 120 veterans and 50 reservists working across Atkins.

To co-ordinate our Armed Forces advocacy and engagement, Atkins has a ‘Partnering with the Armed Forces’ (PwAF) initiative. PwAF works with corporate functions across the UK, aiming to deliver on the organisations’ support through many means, including:

  • Efforts to recruit service leavers, including our attendance at CTP Careers Fairs
  • Encouraging veterans to mentor service leavers, Atkins destined or otherwise
  • Working with HR to implement our Reserves policy, which includes an additional 10 days paid leave to allow reservists to undertake their annual training
  • Hosting an annual conference for reservists to engage with and feedback to senior leadership in the organization
  • Promoting reserve service among our workforce
  • Corporate sponsorship of the Soldiers, Sailors, and Air Forces Association (SSAFA), the UK’s oldest tri-service charity
  • Fundraising for military charities
  • Involvement in an industry alumni group of the Employer Recognition Scheme Gold award. The alumni group was initiated by Atkins for companies to share knowledge and ideas to further the cause
  • Advocating support through forum presentations and webinars
