As an academy business, teaching and learning from each other is an important part of our culture. Mentoring is a great way to do this, and if done well can have huge positive impact on both the mentor and the mentee.
At the FCA we have several mentoring schemes in operation, mainly run through our network groups. We also encourage all our people to use their networks to find their own mentor and provide an internal platform where people can offer mentoring for colleagues. In 2017, we launched the Susan De Mont Mentor of the Year Award which recognises individuals who have demonstrated continued commitment to mentoring and a positively impacted colleagues’ development.
Our Reverse Mentoring programme is sponsored by Business in the Community and provides an opportunity for colleagues from BAME backgrounds to mentor and engage with senior leaders.
The scheme is designed to provide an open and honest environment to spark discussions around creating and delivering inclusive work practices, and to foster a joint learning experience for both parties. The mentoring sessions typically take place on a monthly basis, about an hour in duration, over six months.
We also participate in a number of our external mentoring schemes that are specifically designed to support our diversity and inclusion ambitions. Examples include:
The 30% club is a cross-company mentoring scheme which aims to develop a broader pipeline of women and ‘balance the pyramid’ at all levels. The programme aims to create a step-change in the number of women attaining senior leadership and board roles in their respective organisations.
- Business in the Community: Mentoring Circles
The mentoring scheme provides a platform for BAME individuals to share diverse experiences, feel supported in the workplace and receive career guidance.
- Outstanding Mentoring Scheme
OUTstanding’s Mentoring Programme pairs professionals with senior leaders from the OUTstanding member network.
