Mental Health Initiatives at Legal & General

Five years ago on 24 May 2013 we signed the Time to Change Employer Pledge, a commitment to all of us at L&G to change how we think and act about mental health problems at every level of the company.

Five years on, we have come a long way on this journey, to reduce the stigma and encourage openness and honesty about living with mental health problems and what we can do to support ourselves and each other. Our 1 in 4 and Not a Red Card Campaign have all helped raise awareness and drive good behaviours around mental health in the workplace. 1 in 4 of us will experience a mental health problem and nine in ten say they have faced negative treatment from others as a result. By choosing to be open about mental health, we are all part of a movement that’s changing the conversation around mental health and ensuring that anyone experiencing a mental health problem feels supported.

Time to Talk Day is taking place on Thursday 1 February, which is a day when everyone is encouraged to have a conversation about mental health to help break the silence. You don’t need to be an expert to talk about mental health. It can be as simple as asking someone how they’re doing, or sharing ways to relax after a stressful day. This year’s theme is Any Place is the Right Place to have a conversation. Do have a look at the information that is available right here.

We want everyone who works here to feel they can be open about their mental health, and ask for support if they need it. If you need support, please speak to your line manager in the first instance or contact one of our Mental Health First Aiders. We also have an Employee Assistance Programme - a free and confidential helpline for employees. If you're a line manager looking to support a member of your team, Mental Health First Aid England have produced a guide for you. We also have the Legal & General CBT for Managers too.

You can contact any of our Mental Health First Aiders at any time not just those in your location- as well as face to face you can speak to them by phone or a skype call!

Maybe it also time to consider having a conversation with yourself - The start of a new year tends to be a time we focus on what we want to change about ourselves, to be ‘better’, but perhaps we should rethink this approach and without throwing any resolutions out of the window (as January nears its end) also find some time along the way to think about what we are happy with and proud of in our lives, right now, today? 

Time to talk, to ourselves, to each other, our friends and families. Today.
